Welcome
Welcome to Demolish and Dismantle, the website for C&D Consultancy one of the UK’s leading consultancies in the art of demolition engineering. Demolition has been around since at least 1451BC when the walls of Jericho came tumbling down by the use of controlled demolition by animal horns!
Things have moved on a little since then as the demolition industry now carries out controlled demolition and dismantling by many means, including explosives, high reach machines, robotics, microwave and laser techniques on all types of structures.
C&D Consultancy are involved, as advisers, with the demolition of many structures and buildings throughout Europe and we have a great deal of experience within the team on demolition projects of all types.
We have, over the last few years, been involved as demolition consultants, CDM co-ordinators, or demolition advisers on well over 400 projects ranging from 30 storey tower blocks by explosive demolition, tower block by top down and high reach demolition, industrial demolition, inner city demolition, oil rig and offshore work in the UK and Europe, and many other smaller projects.
CDM 2007 states that all demolition should be planned and C&D can assist in that planning from initial studies to completion.
When we set up our website we saw it as a means of bringing information to the web about demolition in general as well as the work that we undertake and you will, therefore, find links to other demolition related websites, news feeds and legislation to try to answer any questions that you have about demolition and dismantling.
The new CDM Regulations are actively encouraging us all to become more competent in our work and the best way to ensure competence is to undergo training in demolition, so why not take a look at our training site to view courses on offer that are demolition orientated.
And finally take a look at the “When demolition goes wrong” section where you will find videos and news of demolition around the world when it didn’t go according to plan! I am pleased to say that C&D Consultancy were not involved in any of the projects in this section!
Thank you for visiting the site, enjoy the visit and please revisit soon.
John Woodward.
About Us
C&D Consultancy was established in May 2005 after John Woodward left Loxley Dismantling Ltd., an NFDC demolition company where he was managing director.
Initial work was estimating for a number of small, local companies with workloads growing to include Health and Safety advice, Method Statements and Health and Safety plans etc.
In 2006 the company expanded its customer base and undertook its first overseas project in Cyprus with estimating and health & safety documentation produced for the demolition of a former fertilizer plant.
During 2007 further expansion came with work as consultants for the demolition of the first oil rig to be demolished on UK soil at Lerwick, Shetland. C&D Consultancy were then also appointed as CDM co-ordinators for the demolition of 10 No 20 storey tower blocks by explosives for Glasgow Housing Association.
2008 saw continued work on the project for GHA and consultancy on a further oil rig to be dismantled at Hartlepool.
2008 also saw the commencement of the training division with Roland O'Connor recruited to deliver training courses in demolition and related subjects, and John becoming Vice President of the Institute of Demolition Engineers.
2009 saw John update the NFDC guidance for demolition of tower blocks by 'top down' methods and C&D expand their workload with additional CDM-C work on a number of tower blocks in Glasgow for members of the GHA tower block demolition framework agreement.
2010 saw John take the President's chair at the IDE and continue with speaking engagement in the UK and Europe to present on subjects such as demolition training, offshore demolition, and worldwide accident statistics to name just three. In the UK the workload continued to grow with John undertaking expert witness work and more consultancy projects on tower block demolition throughout the UK, and a number of industrial sector demolition projects.
2011 was a good year as turnover again increased, particularly in the training division as we launched new training methods with much more video and visual content. Consultancy orders continued for tower block demolition with 8 tower blocks completed during this year.
2012 came with a further increase in turnover, more training hours delivered than ever before, and recruitment of new team members to supplement the existing skills within the team. CDM-C work on tower blocks continued throughout the year both North and South of the border.

Hand/Arm Vibration Awareness
Introduction
Hand-arm vibration is caused by vibration transmitted into the hand and arms through the palm and fingers. Workers whose hands are regularly exposed to hand-arm vibration may suffer from damage to the tissues of the hands and arms, which cause the symptoms collectively known as hand-arm vibration syndrome.
The risks from hand-arm vibration affect people across many industries and
occupations. The risks are greatly increased with use of higher vibration equipment and with prolonged and regular use of the equipment.However, investigations have shown that vibration hazards can be controlled and risks reduced by good management.
Aims
This course provides instruction to managers and employees in the dangers of hand/arm vibration when using powered equipment. It will enable candidates to know limits of use and thereby comply with legal requirements.
The Course includes:
• Employer’s and employee’s legal responsibilities
• Hazards arising - vibration white finger

Oxy-Fuel/Propane Cutting
Introduction
This practical course is designed for all personnel engaged in or supervising Oxy-Fuel/Propane Cutting.
Oxy-fuel gas cutting is used to cut metal in a wide variety of industries. When used manually to cut uncoated steel in an open environment, low levels of exposure to fumes and gases are encountered. However, occupational exposure limits can be exceeded when cutting:
1) in an enclosed or confined space;
2) coated or contaminated steel; and
3) using mechanised cutting.
It is therefore essential that a suitable and sufficient assessment under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) is conducted for each particular application in which the process is used and that appropriate control measures are established.
Aims
To provide delegates with an understanding of the principles of oxy-fuel gas cutting process, advantages and limitations of the process, health and safety issues associated with oxy-fuel gas cutting activities and to demonstrate competence in setting-up, safe use and practical application.
The Course includes:
* Personal safety
* Inform and update attendees on current codes of practice and legislation
* Necessity for safe systems of work
* Help improve safety within participating organisations
* Safe use of oxy-fuel gases
* Safe use of gas cylinders
* Correct selection of equipment
* Pre-use visual checks on equipment
* Safe handling of gas cylinders
* Transportation of gas and cylinders
* General workshop safety
* Correct safety procedures
* Correct set-up of equipment
* Faults and causes
* Rectification of faults
* Leak test procedures
* Implementation of a safe system of work and emergency actions and procedures in the event of leakage, unsafe equipment or an incident, failure, fire or accident.
* Correct nozzle selection
* Setting correct working pressures
* Correct light-up and shut-down procedures
* Correct cutting technique
* Practice to reach an acceptable standard

Aims
The course aims to address the following points:
The Course includes:
So where and how does it go wrong?
* Site Assessment: Failure to identify all hazards
* Machine selection: Not getting the right machine for the job
* Planning the work: Failure to evaluate all hazards and eliminate/minimise risks where necessary
* Familiarisation: Lack of understanding of specific machine controls and functions
* Operators: Untrained or unauthorised users
* Supervision: Unsafe practices are allowed to continue or are not addressed
* Inspections: Failure to complete daily pre-use checks and weekly inspections
* Maintenance: Machine defects are not reported or repaired
* Harness: Reluctance to wear restraint lanyard in booms
* Emergency Planning: No contingency plans
Responsibility is not solely the operator's; those who plan, supervise and manage the use of MEWPs, must also be able to demonstrate their competence.
Delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.

Manual Handling Course
Introduction
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended in 2002 apply to a wide range of manual handling activities, including lifting,lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying. The load may be either inanimate - such as a box or a trolley, or animate - a person.
More than a third of all over-three-day injuries reported each year to HSE and local authorities are caused by manual handling - the transporting or supporting of loads by hand or by bodily force.
Manual handling injuries can occur wherever people are at work. Heavy manual labour, awkward postures, manual materials handling, and previous or existing injury are all risk factors implicated in the development of musculoskeletal disorders.
Aims
The course aims to make employees aware of their responsibilities aswell as their employer's in accordance with the Regulations:
Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable;
Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that can’t be avoided; and
Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable.
It will help delegates understand:
* Manual handling risk factors and how injuries can occur;
* How to carry out safe manual handling including good handling technique
* Appropriate systems of work for the individual’s tasks and environment;
* Use of mechanical aids;
* Practical work to allow the trainer to identify and put right anything the trainee is not doing safely.
The Course includes:
• Employer’s and employee’s legal responsibilities
• Common hazards when lifting & moving
• Accident statistics
• Risk assessment
• Causes of injury & strain
• Main parts of the spine
• Correct handling techniques
• Weight limits and guidelines
• Assessment of individual safe limits
The course is accredited by Emergency First Response.

Site Waste Management Plans
Introduction
As from the 6th April 2008 Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) became law if the project you are working on has a construction phase cost of more than £300,000 (excluding VAT).
(The Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008)
(Regulations SI 2008: No. 314 issued under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005).
No work should commence unless there is a Site Waste Management Plan in place.
Each project should have one SWMP, which is a live document that must be updated through the course of the project. The Plan has also to be kept by the Principal Contractor (under these regulations) for two years after completion of the construction phase.
To avoid a fixed penalty of £300.00 a site waste management plan should be available upon request.
Aims
This course is designed to ensure that all the key players (clients, designers, architects, principal contractors, subcontractors and suppliers etc) understand the requirements of the Site Waste Management Plan Regulations 2008 and how they apply to each role.
Delegates will gain an extensive awareness and appreciation of the requirements, potential benefits and practical challenges associated with SWMPs. As a result they will be better equipped to start preparing and delivering against site waste management plans.
The Course includes:
* What is a SWMP?
* Why do we need them & how will they add value?
* What do they mean in practice?
* Where can we get more help?
* How the industry impacts on the environment
* The impacts waste has on the environment
* The main benefits of managing waste
* Good practice with regards to waste management
* (including waste segregation and waste minimisation techniques)
* An overview of all legal requirements related to waste management (including the Duty of Care)
* What should be included in a SWMP
* What is required to work in line with a successful SWMP on site
Delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.

RPE Awareness & Fit Test
RPE (RESPIRATORY PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT)
EMPLOYEE AWARENESS & FIT TEST
Introduction
The requirement for RPE training and Face Mask Fit Testing is described in the Approved Code of Practices supporting:
HASAW 1974
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002
The Control of Lead at Work Regulations (CLAW) 2002
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006
Face mask fit testing is a legal requirement for suitability of RPE by checking that a tight fitting face mask matches the person's facial features and seals adequately to the wearer's face. It will also help ensure that incorrectly fitting face masks are not selected for use.
Inadequate fit is not in compliance with the law and will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer. Any reduction in protection can put the RPE wearer's life in danger or may lead to immediate or long term ill health. Correct fitting of the face masks at all times is vital to prevent exposure.
Aims
The course will help ensure compliance with the law covering suitability of RPE selection, use, maintenance and Fit Testing in line with current Legislation. The purpose of the test is simply to ensure that the chosen mask actually fits the wearer and has the potential, if correctly worn, to offer the minimum level of protection it is designed for.
The Course includes:
* Legislation
* Employee awareness
* Risks and dangers of incorrectly fitting masks
* Importance of selecting correct RPE
* Face mask fit demonstration
* Looking after RPE
* Individual face mask fit & evaluation
Please ensure:
You bring your RPE Face Mask
Arrive clean shaven
Do not eat, drink or smoke 1 hour before the face fit
Delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.

Business Continuity Plans
Introduction
Unplanned events can have a devastating effect on businesses. Crises such as fire, damage to stock, theft or vandalism, natural disasters, powers cuts, illness of key staff or IT system failure, etc., could all make it difficult or even impossible to carry out your normal day-to-day activities.
At worst, this could see you losing important customers - and even going out of business altogether.
But with good planning you can take steps to minimise the potential impact of a disaster - and ideally prevent it happening in the first place.
Aims
This course will help you to identify potential risks, make preparations for emergencies and test how your business is likely to cope in a disaster.
The Course includes:
Business continuity planning in the event of a major fire or catastrophic event.
Record keeping
Action plan
Key personnel and roles
In order to develop a business continuity plan you need to have a thorough understanding of your business. This involves knowing the critical functions of your business, the effect of those functions being disrupted and the priority for recovery of those functions. This process is known as a business impact analysis.
You should consider the importance of the function on the survival of your business (percentage of income or work load, how critical the function is to other functions, etc) and how quickly each function must be re-established.
The completed business impact analysis will assist you to prioritise what or service you need to reinstate first during an emergency.
The business continuity management process is a circular process; it is vital the planning does not end once the plan is written. It should be reviewed and tested to ensure it remains up to date and effective.
Delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.
