C&D Consultancy Goes Trans-European

C&D Consultancy, the Midlands-based specialist demolition consultants, has been named as one of the keynote speakers at the European Demolition Association seminar and conference in Istanbul, Turkey in November this year.

John Woodward, managing director of C&D Consultancy, will take his place among the elite of the European demolition industry next month. Woodward has been named as one of the keynote speakers at the European Demolition Association’s seminar/conference that is scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey from 6 to 8 November 2008.

Although the three-day programme is scheduled to cover a wide range of issues and topics, the seminar/conference programme will have a strong training bias and it is in this area where Woodward’s expertise will be brought to bear. “In many ways, the UK is seen as a leader in the field of demolition training initiatives,” Woodward says. “I am looking forward to sharing the UK experience with our European counterparts and learning how they are tackling this vital issue in other countries.

As co-author of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors’ guidance for the Deconstruction of Tower Blocks and operator of his own training division, Woodward is also expecting to play an active role in wider discussions, particularly those related to the safe use of demolition equipment.

With the publication of its guidance notes on the safe use of high reach excavators and more recently track-mounted crushers, the UK in general and the NFDC in particular are setting the benchmark for the demolition industry across the world,” Woodward concludes. “The European demolition industry may be separated by physical and geographic borders but we are all demolition people and this is an ideal way to create, share and encourage best practice.

HSE Asbestos campaign backed by former England footballer Ian Wright

Asbestos still has a major impact in the building and demolition industry with awareness and understanding key issues in the workplace.

It's good news then, that former England and Arsenal football player Ian Wright has stepped up to help support the HSE's Asbestos: The Hidden Killer campaign. Being a former tradesman himself, Ian Wright reacted when he found out so many individuals were dying from exposure to asbestos. He said:

I used to be a plasterer before becoming a professional footballer, and was really surprised to learn that the number of deaths is actually on the increase year on year. If that was footballers dying, the whole of the premiership would be wiped out in just three months.

He will now become an ambassador for the campaign in a bid to increase awareness and knowledge of the dangers of working with asbestos.

Steve Coldrick, director of the HSE Disease Reduction Programme commented:

We need to educate tradesmen about how asbestos and its dangers are relevant to them. We want them to change the way they work so that they don't put their lives at risk ... Exposure to asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths, with around 4,000 people a year dying from asbestos-related disease. The overall number of deaths is rising because a large number of workers who have already been exposed to asbestos dust around 40 years ago will go on to develop mesothelioma, a terminal cancer or other asbestos related diseases.
