Bring Us Your Unemployed

The National Federation of Demolition Contractors and Demolition Publications have launched demolition-jobs.co.uk, a FREE website designed to allow newly-redundant and long-term unemployed demolition workers to advertise their skills and qualifications to prospective employers.

As the worldwide economic crisis deepens, demolition workers have started to feel the effects with an increasing number of temporary worker lay-offs and permanent staff redundancies.

Against this background, the National Federation of Demolition Contractors has joined forces with Demolition Publications (publisher of the Federation’s own Demolition & Dismantling magazine) to launch demolition-jobs.co.uk, a recruitment website with a difference.

“Traditional recruitment websites charge employers to advertise jobs to potential candidates but we wanted to take a different, more altruistic approach,” says founder Mark Anthony. “We have effectively turned the recruitment process on its head to provide the demolition industry’s unemployed workers with a FREE medium through which to display their skills, experience and qualifications to prospective employers.”

Mark Anthony reports that the concept of demolition-jobs.co.uk was driven by the fallout from the current recession and by some wise words from a demolition industry veteran; the late Sidney Hunt Snr. “Sidney was one of the most influential figures the UK demolition industry has ever produced. He once described his industry peers as ‘hard bastards, but with a heart’,” he explains. “I have witnessed this first-hand over the years and have seen the NFDC raise countless thousands of pounds for charitable causes. Even in the midst of recession, it is an industry that is unparalleled in its willingness and eagerness to help its own. That really was the inspiration behind demolition-jobs.co.uk.”

NFDC chief executive Howard Button, another driving force behind demolition-jobs.co.uk, says that the time is right for a different approach. “There is no doubt that the UK demolition industry is on the brink of an unprecedented recession,” he says. “Through the NFDC and the National Demolition Training Group, we have invested heavily in the people that work within this sector. With our backing of demolition-jobs.co.uk, it is our intention to invest in people that used to work and still want to work in this industry and to safeguard valuable demolition jobs by helping people stay within this vital industry.”

Changes at the top of NFDC

This Friday, 6th March, brings the NFDC AGM where changes are made to the officers of the institute.

With this in mind we at C&D would like to congratulate the following:-

John Wring on two years as President where the NFDC has continued to grow and raise the profile of the demolition industry throughout the UK and into Europe. Well done John, now take the time to sit back and watch rather than being in the hot seat and take time with Jill and the children to chill out and not worry about audit schemes, conventions etc etc.

Dave Darsey on becoming the President with very strong views as to where he would like the NFDC to go during his presidency and the dedication to the role that will ensure that his views are met. Also to Sarah who will be at his side throughout his term in office and be the steadying influence that he may need if times get rocky.

Gary Bishop on moving up to Vice President to assist Dave, as he has done for 2 years, with the duties of the office of President and to stand in for Dave as required. Gary will bring his own skills to the role of Vice and will be excellent in that position. His wife Sarah will be there to help him if things get difficult and will continue to be present at functions throughout the UK.

Jill and I look forward to many events shared with Gary and Sarah over the next four years whilst Gary and I fulfil our roles as Vice and then President of the NFDC and IDE respectively.

William Sinclair or Mark Davison on taking up the position of 2nd Vice President that will see them take their first steps on the road to the NFDC Presidential office. Both will bring a dedication to the position of 2nd Vice and a willingness to work hard for the NFDC over the next 8 years.
