Glasgow Red Road Estate Flats

We were sent this image which features as part of a photo exhibition about life on Glasgow's Red Road Estate.

Currently C&D Consultancy is working with Safedem on the demolition of the Red Road Flats which once dominated the Glasgow skyline. As the Safedem website explains:

The Red Road flats are iconic for a number of reasons. The multi-storey buildings comprise of between 28-32 floors, are of steel frame construction and have an extremely high level of asbestos containing materials both internally and externally. The Red Road buildings were the largest in Europe at the time of construction in the early 1960's, and remained the largest only until fairly recently.

Last of the Portland naval oil tanks demolished

The video above shows the last of the naval oil tanks being demolished in Portland. A fitting end to the last tank being removed was Geroge Davey, a 99-year-old Portlander at the controls of the excavator. He was born the same year the tanks were erected.

The reason for the tank clearance is to make way for a new venue to help host the Olympics in 2012.

Thanks to Demolition News for finding the video.

Bristol landmark sail structure demolished as unsafe

Bristol has lost one of its landmarks due to it being deemed unsafe. The wooden sail structure has been taken down by Wring Group due to faults in the wooden mast posts.

The decision to dismantle the sail structure was not taken lightly and repairs have been carried out over the past three years in an attempt to save it. Alas, the repairs failed and more cracks appeared in the wood leaving no other choice than to remove it for safety reasons.

Two chimneys blown up for charity

thisisleicestershire.co.uk, part of the Leicester Mercury, has a great post and video up about the Desford Steel Tubes factory chimney demolition that didn't go to plan.

Our own John Woodward is quoted as saying:

This has never happened before, we've never even had one tower standing after a blast. The odds of one tower remaining up is 100 to one, the odds of that happening to two towers is about 10,000 to one.
