On the 23rd February, the IDE held its 2018 Spring Seminar at the Leeds Royal Armouries. This year the event was a sell out in terms of professionals attending and companies who recognize the importance of the seminar to their businesses and the sector as a whole.

Highlights of the event included a £10,000 cheque being handed to the chief executive of Niemman-Pick UK, a charity dedicated to helping those with Niemann-Pick disease and the debilitating effects it has on the body.

Attendees enjoyed talks given by Erith's Andrew Dyson, Curtins' Russel Bowman, ABB Ltd's Stephen Andrew, Able UK's Neil Etherington, Casella's Shaun Knott, Wayne Bagnall, Sustainable Solutions' Dr. John Henry Looney and Kris Atkins, and finally a comedic break thanks to comedian John Ryan who tackled the taboo subject of mental health.

Full details of the seminar, the talks, and many more photos can be viewed on the Institute of Demolition Engineers' website linked to below.

Can you believe we are fast approaching the 10th anniversary of the World Demolition Summit?

November 7-8th this year will be the 10th edition of the summit, and we're heading to a new location. Dublin to be precise!

The World Demolition Summit 2018 will be held in the Aviva Stadium, which provides a fantastic range of facilities to cater for the conference, the awards, and of course the networking attendees have access to. The stadium is also more than capable of handling the numbers the summit now enjoys. Last year there were 394 delegates, representing 131 companies from 28 different countries. The 10th edition could (and should) be a record breaker.

Here's a reminder of last year's summit:

The 2018 delegate rate is £600 (660 euros, US$768). For that, you gain access to all conference sessions, networking breaks, drinks receptions, and the awards dinner. There will also be discounted rooms at the nearby Ballsbridge Hotel 4, with those rooms becoming available for booking in mid-February.

There is a dedicated booking page available, or if you'd like more information contact Julia Bossie at julia.bossie@khl.com.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3980032563854682348.post-82213568794133600342018-01-23T08:09:00.000+00:002018-01-23T08:09:19.979+00:00Company Exposes 13 Employees and Contractors to AsbestosWe've been reminded of the value of a detailed risk assessment this week after it was revealed SSE Hornsea Ltd allowed 13 employees and contractors to be exposed to asbestos fibres.

Hornsea runs a natural gas storage facility on the East Yorkshire coast and tasked a team of maintenance staff with removing a non-return valve from a compressed air distribution system. In order to remove the sealing gasket material, they fitted a wire brush to an electric drill. That worked, but filled the workshop with dust.

It turns out the dust contained chrysotile (white) asbestos, which 13 people had then come into contact with over the course of two days before the danger was revealed and the workshop closed.

The Health and Safety Executive decided to prosecute SSE Hornsea. Not only had the risk assessment failed to identify the asbestos risk, but the records held regarding the non-return valve were inadequate. Also, the maintenance team leader had not undergone asbestos awareness training.

As well as the potential impact this dust could have on the future health of the 13 exposed people, Hornsea now has to pay a £300,000 fine and £12,670.72 in costs. The company pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 2 (1) and 3(1) of the Health & Safety at Work etc, Act 1974.

It should go without saying: train your staff! We carry out a range of training courses including asbestos awareness. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more or book places.

The subject of the case study is "Demolition contractor electrical flashover" and it's applicable to persons involved in demolition activities. Here are the details:

A demolition contractor forced the door of a low voltage circuit breaker cubicle open using a metal crowbar. In doing so, the crowbar went across the terminals of the three phase service and caused a flashover that seriously burnt the individual and set the building on fire.

The factory on this site was redundant, but the 11,000 volt substation and low voltage service on site were live. No request to disconnect the substation and electricity service was made by the property owner when the factory closed down. Power was still being used on the site, but at a reduced level.

The demolition contractor had requested and had been provided a quotation to disconnect the substation and low voltage service, but had not accepted the terms of the contract or paid for the work to be undertaken. They were fully aware that the substation and services were "live."

The impact of this chain of events was the injured person received life-changing burns to his hands and face.

The demolition company who employed the injured person is under investigation by the HSE for breaches of health and safety legislation.

The learning points from this incident are as follows:

Never assume any electrical plant or cables on a site are dead unless proven so.

The CDM Regulations require utilities are disconnected prior to demolition commencing.

The Electricity at Work regulations require employers to adopt safe system of work to ensure electricity plant is safe before work commences on it.

If you are a member eligible to vote you are being asked to vote in two contests as follows:-

1. Re-election of Stuart Accleton as Honorary Treasurer

You may think that as Stuart holds the position and is the only name on the ballot paper then you do not need to vote for him. This is wrong, he must be re-elected to the position as he is the best man for the job and can only be re-elected if the members vote for him so please DO NOT IGNORE this section.

2. Election to Council of Management

This year there are three places on the Council available and we have seven candidates to choose from when casting your three votes. I would ask that before you cast your votes you read the "manifestos" of the candidates to see which of the seven have the members' interests at heart and that is where you should cast your vote. It would be unethical of me as a Past President to tell you who I think you should, or should not vote for, but I will say that Mike Kehoe of C&D Consultancy is a candidate and Mike follows my own line of thinking with regard to the IDE.

The IDE, I believe, has always been an Institute for its members whoever they work for and whatever their position within demolition and that should not change. Demolition is not just for the privileged few, it is for everyone, so vote for those candidates that will ensure that IDE continues to put the needs of the individual members first, rather than the needs of companies.

And remember that even though you have three votes that you can cast you can use one, two, or all three of those votes. So if there are only two people that you feel meet your requirements for helping to run the IDE then vote for those two only. A "throw away" vote on a third candidate who you are not so keen on could, in fact, vote them into office before the ones you want to be in office.

The IDE has come a long way in the last ten years and this vote could be crucial in shaping it's future. Please VOTE but VOTE WISELY!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3980032563854682348.post-85893387787501218222017-10-13T08:03:00.000+01:002017-10-13T08:03:02.376+01:00IDE Midlands Regional Meeting 12th December

An increasing number of companies in the Recycling and Waste Management sector are investing in mobile safety systems to protect the public and their staff it has been revealed today.

The announcement was made by Wolverhampton-based Spillard Safety Systems in the lead up to the RWM Show at the NEC this month (12-14 th ) and comes after the company has seen a rise in orders from this arena.

Bosses at the firm believes this is down to clients wanting to ensure drivers of their vehicles are not susceptible to any blind spots when doing their jobs and also a growing desire to protect themselves against expensive legal cases when accidents happen.

“Over the last twelve months we have supplied products that have been installed on vehicle fleets for utility companies, waste management specialists and recycling firms and they are already reporting fewer incidents and examples where our camera systems have proven they were not responsible for incidents.” explained Peter Spillard, Managing Director.

He went on to add: “RWM is a fantastic show and this year we will be unveiling our new Optronics HD Range, which takes clarity of picture to a whole new level. Our team of experts will be on hand and there will also be live video demonstrations and examples of ‘blind spot’ mapping too.”

This year Spillard Safety Systems has been championing the removal of ‘blind spots’ in the commercial vehicle, construction, quarrying and now waste sectors for over 25 years.

It currently supports more than 100 different customers with the latest mobile safety equipment, whilst also working with various groups to educate them on the dangers of poor visibility.

One of the company’s biggest success stories is its partnership with S&B Waste Management & Recycling.

What originally started as a test of one product has resulted in more than 25 vehicles being fitted with a range of Spillard solutions after productivity increased. Not only did S&B Waste perform more journeys for its customers, but money was also saved from fraudulent claims.
