IDE returns to Leeds for sell out Spring Seminar

On the 23rd February, the IDE held its 2018 Spring Seminar at the Leeds Royal Armouries. This year the event was a sell out in terms of professionals attending and companies who recognize the importance of the seminar to their businesses and the sector as a whole.

Highlights of the event included a £10,000 cheque being handed to the chief executive of Niemman-Pick UK, a charity dedicated to helping those with Niemann-Pick disease and the debilitating effects it has on the body.

Attendees enjoyed talks given by Erith's Andrew Dyson, Curtins' Russel Bowman, ABB Ltd's Stephen Andrew, Able UK's Neil Etherington, Casella's Shaun Knott, Wayne Bagnall, Sustainable Solutions' Dr. John Henry Looney and Kris Atkins, and finally a comedic break thanks to comedian John Ryan who tackled the taboo subject of mental health.

Full details of the seminar, the talks, and many more photos can be viewed on the Institute of Demolition Engineers' website linked to below.

IDE Regional Meeting and Peaky Blinders Tour CANCELLED

Please note that the IDE Regional Meeting and Peaky Blinders Tour scheduled for tomorrow evening at the Old Crown, Digbeth has been CANCELLED owing to the current weather conditions and the local forecast of -10 degrees overnight tonight and into tomorrow.

As the tour is a walking tour of back alleys and streets of Digbeth there is a risk of ice underfoot on uncleared footpaths and that risk cannot be eliminated.

The event will be rearranged for 2018.

IDE Elections are upon us so use your vote wisely!

The IDE elections for Council of Management are now upon us with members receiving voting emails as we speak.

If you are a member eligible to vote you are being asked to vote in two contests as follows:-

1. Re-election of Stuart Accleton as Honorary Treasurer
You may think that as Stuart holds the position and is the only name on the ballot paper then you do not need to vote for him. This is wrong, he must be re-elected to the position as he is the best man for the job and can only be re-elected if the members vote for him so please DO NOT IGNORE this section.

2. Election to Council of Management
This year there are three places on the Council available and we have seven candidates to choose from when casting your three votes. I would ask that before you cast your votes you read the "manifestos" of the candidates to see which of the seven have the members' interests at heart and that is where you should cast your vote. It would be unethical of me as a Past President to tell you who I think you should, or should not vote for, but I will say that Mike Kehoe of C&D Consultancy is a candidate and Mike follows my own line of thinking with regard to the IDE.

The IDE, I believe, has always been an Institute for its members whoever they work for and whatever their position within demolition and that should not change. Demolition is not just for the privileged few, it is for everyone, so vote for those candidates that will ensure that IDE continues to put the needs of the individual members first, rather than the needs of companies.

And remember that even though you have three votes that you can cast you can use one, two, or all three of those votes. So if there are only two people that you feel meet your requirements for helping to run the IDE then vote for those two only. A "throw away" vote on a third candidate who you are not so keen on could, in fact, vote them into office before the ones you want to be in office.

The IDE has come a long way in the last ten years and this vote could be crucial in shaping it's future. Please VOTE but VOTE WISELY!

Remembering Dave Ross, who sadly passed away on Saturday

C&D Consultancy are sad to announce the death on Saturday, 8th July of Dave Ross.

Dave worked with C&D on a number of projects over the last ten years and was a well respected member of our team. I first met Dave at Loxley Dismantling where he was one of my site supervisors and we kept our working relationship and friendship going ever since that day.

Dave worked on many complex projects for ourselves, Apollo GCL, Thorne Demolition, AR Demolition, and many other companies during his career, and enjoyed his retirement years by cruising the worlds oceans with beloved wife Jean, drinking a few beers in his local working men's club or demolishing things on the few weeks a year that he decided to work to earn some money for another cruise!

Dave was extremely proud to have achieved IDE status after working in our industry for over 50 years and he was one of the first "old school" demolition men persuaded to join IDE when the institute opened its doors to a wider range of entry criteria.

Dave was an excellent site manager, a great machine driver, and a true Yorkshireman, never happier than when in his caravan at some demolition site eating his large pan of "Rotherham Stew" cooked by Jean for Dave to reheat most nights when he was away. In fact, the only nights that he didn't eat Jean's stew he would eat a rump steak as he was a lover of "Proper English Grub."

Dave once sat with me in his working men's club drinking a few beers, as you do, and told me of a great cruise that Jean and he had just completed on P&O Oriana where for the 28 nights of the cruise Dave ate a rump steak every night as "I couldn't face the foreign food."

He will be remembered for his friendliness to everyone and his ability to think a job through to get it down in the safest manner.

He will be sadly missed. Funeral details are unconfirmed at the moment, but we will post them when received and Jill and I will celebrate his memory on Saturday night with a few beers and a steak. I just hope that wherever he is now the menu is not just Curry and Chinese food!

IDE South East Regional Meeting summary

The IDE successfully hosted the second South Regional meeting of 2017 on the 4th May, and decided to remind everyone who couldn't attend what they missed. You won't want to miss the next one!

There were three presentations given during the meeting sponsored by Erith Contractors and held at their 33 Grosvenor Place site in London. Nick Turnbull from GNAT-UK spoke about the Brokk remote Demolition of the Shrewsbury Flax Mills Silos, which were located adjacent to the Grade One listed, and first ever, iron framed building erected in the World.

Mark Greenhalgh from Peak Access spoke about the rope access industry and assistance given to Erith and the National Trust in recovering valuable documents from an 18th century stately home fire.

Finally there was Terry Madden of Erith. He spoke about the demolition, façade retention, and enabling works package for the Cross Rail Eastern Ticket Hall OSD Bond Street and Hanover Square redevelopment.

The next South East Regional Meeting will be held in August or September. 37 attended the May 4th event, hopefully the numbers for the next one will be even higher.
