12 Days of Christmas Demolition

I sat down last week and worked out what the 12 days of Christmas would mean to a demolition engineer and decided that I needed some images and music to make it all come together. So I sent my ideas off to Demolition News and Fred Anthony, their music and image guru, and he did his stuff and came up with this:-

Big thanks to Fred Anthony and Mark Anthony for making it happen.

Second tower in the series of Red Road demolitions successfully completed by Safedem Limited

On Sunday, just before noon, saw the second of the iconic Red Road, Glasgow towerblocks successfully demolished by Safedem Limited using explosive demolition.

The demolition of one of the "point blocks" came after several months work for Safedem in removing asbestos materials and preparing the 32 storey steel framed block for demolition and several months work for the C&D CDMC team of John Woodward & Craig Wilkinson.

William Sinclair MD of Safedem and lead explosives engineer was joined on this blast by his father David Sinclair who flew over from the USA to assist with the preperation work and charging up. The blast on Sunday came after a very early start for the team (including John & Craig) to establish the exclusion zone, set up the blast control centre and evacuate several hundred residents from their homes before the blast could go ahead.

The blast design for this block was different in as much as the block was smaller in length but considerably "fatter" than the slab block demolished in July 2012 and, as such, the collapse mechanism could not be the same.

We have included footage of yesterday's blast above and you can compare it to the film shot by the One Show in July. Mark Anthony of DemolitionNews has also captured some stunning shots, which are available to view on fotopedia.

C&D Consultancy continue to be featured in Demolition magazine

When Mark Anthony Publications launched their new magazine "Demolition" earlier this year we were pleased to be featured in the first edition and that pleasure is now repeated with C&D featuring on pages 40 & 41 of the current edition in the "Breaking Free" article introducing our new breaker training course in conjunction with Rammer.

The new course, fully featured on our sister site www.demolitiontraining.com, is an industry first and follows extensive discussion with Alan Matchett at Rammer to provide not only a bespoke training course written around the Rammer operating manual, but an agreement to provide trainers to deliver the course anywhere in the world that Rammer hammers are in use.

The new course will be available from 1st April 2013, initially with one trainer whilst John Woodward, Duncan Rudall, Roland O'Connor and Craig Wilkinson complete the extensive inductions into "the Rammer way" in Finland from 20th to 23rd May.

If you would like to read the Rammer training article in full you can do so by visiting www.demolitionnews.com and registering for a paper copy of the magazine. Or why not read it online right now.

IDE Fishing Day 2012 report

On Wednesday 3rd October nine anglers set off at the crack of dawn to drive to Furnace Mill Fishery at Bewdley to take part in the IDE Fishing Day. It was pleasing to see anglers travel from leafy Surrey, Chesterfield, and Redcar to attend the event.

The day started in true demolition style with a full English breakfast served by Jane Brown to all before Ed Brown conducted the important draw for pegs on Furnace Lake. Following the draw the anglers set off to their chosen peg to set up rods ready for the whistle.

The weather on the day was a little mixed with sunshine early in the day with occasional heavy showers and wind but that did nothing to dampen spirits of the anglers.

After 5.5 hours of watching floats intently it was time for the weigh in and it quickly became apparent that some anglers had done better than others and one angler in particular had managed to find the bigger fish in the lake!

The results were as follows:-
  1. Neville Pantin 47lbs 6oz (Neville also had the biggest fish at 9.00lbs)
  2. Mark Anthony Snr 29lbs 0oz
  3. Craig Wilkinson 22lbs 11oz
  4. Iain Kirk 14lbs 12oz
  5. John Woodward 11lbs 5oz
  6. Mike Wilkinson 10lbs 4oz
  7. Ron Parkin 7lbs 11oz
Following the weigh in all anglers returned to the club house to a chilli con carne and salad meal whilst prizes were presented to all anglers.

Neville Pantin was presented with the Demolition News Tight Lines Trophy before he chose his prizes for winning catch and biggest fish from the prizes of rods, reels and fishing luggage.

Other prizes went to the 2nd and 3rd placed anglers, whilst those who finished “out of the medal” places received fishing clothing or ECY Haulmark baseball caps.

Thank you’s go to:- An alternative report of the day can be found at www.demolitionnews.com

An Industry Rebranded?

Mark Anthony of Demolition News has written a thought-provoking article for the Construction Equipment website. It talks about how the Demolition industry as a whole has a "reputation for being rough and tough."

Our own John Woodward is mentioned throughout. Here's excerpt:

"But does that image really cut it in this day and age of health and safety conscious, risk averse and political correctness?

Well, Advanced Explosive Demolition's Eric Kelly - recently named world explosive demolition contractor of the year - certainly doesn't think so. In fact, he believes the time has come for the industry to strip away it's tough exterior and to be taken seriously as a sector with genuine skill; one that can hold its head up high alongside any other engineering-based career.
"

You can read the full article at the Construction Equipment website.

Mark Anthony's Tour of Scandinavia

Anyone who is a regular reader of Demolitionnews or follows its editor Mark Anthony on Twitter will have read of his recent “adventure” across Scandinavia in an attempt to return home to Epsom. Due to ice, sub zero temperatures, snow and fog, it took him what seemed like an endless four days to return to the UK.

My wife Jill has suggested that he should download these music tracks to his iPod following this adventure:-

Show me the way to go home.
Ice, Ice Baby,
Let it snow,
All around the world,
Lost in France (and Norway, Sweden and Denmark),
Homeward bound,
Fly to the moon (or anywhere else),
When will I see you again,
Trains and boats and planes,
Ferry Cross the Mersey (or the fjord),

If you have any more suggestions please let us know via the comments section below.

SED 2011 has been cancelled

As a some had predicted, SED (Site Equipment Demonstration) 2011 has been cancelled. Not only that but the website SED365.co.uk and the Site Equipment Manager magazine have been terminated with immediate effect.

Here's the message sent out by Robert Brighouse, Managing Director:

Regretfully, I am writing to inform you that RBI has taken the decision to cancel Site Equipment Demonstration (SED) 2011, which was due to take place on May 17th-19th 2011.

The recession in construction has continued to affect suppliers’ marketing budgets and despite the hard work of the sales team and goodwill from the market, the current level of commitment to next year's show is not what we had hoped and our feeling is the show is unlikely to meet our expectations. We therefore feel that we have no alternative but to cancel the show.

Since the closure of Contract Journal, RBI has supported SED with the monthly magazine Site Equipment Manager, and the website SED365.co.uk. Both these brands will close with immediate effect as a result of the cancellation of the show.

Thank you for your support of SED and the other RBI construction brands over the years, it has been much appreciated.

Demolition News' Mark Anthony has made it very clear why SED ultimately failed:

As we have mentioned previously, the exhibiton’s organisers were once of and for the industry. They were on site, come rain or shine, up to their knees and axles in the mud that seemed to categorise the early SED shows.

Sadly, they were replaced by men in sharp suits, sporting sharp haircuts, and wielding sharp economic scalpels aimed at anything that didn’t turn a fast buck or which might threaten to get their shiny shoes dirty.

We hope all the staff this has affected right before the holidays manage to find new employment swiftly.

The demolition Daily is the industry's daily newspaper

Demolition News has created the equivalent of a daily newspaper for the demolition industry but for your web browser.

The demolition Daily brings together the latest news from the NFDC, Environmental Agency, HSE, key individuals and companies from the world of demolition, and of course the odd nugget of information from our own John Woodward via his Twitter feed.

As Demolition News explains:

Each day, paper.li will pull together the Twitter posts from each of the individuals above and more than 30 of the industry’s key online movers and shakers, and present it to you in an easy-to-read, newspaper-style format. And you don’t have to be a Twitter user to read the newspaper.

In fact, all you need to do is visit The Demolition Daily each day (or add it as a favourite) and let us bring you the thoughts and views of some of the industry’s most influential individuals.

New Quick Switch system could save lives

Demolition News is backing a new quick hitch safety pin warning device from Quick Switch that has been developed specifically to address the issue of accidents caused by buckets and other attachments becoming unexpectedly detached from their carrier machine due to the failure or misuse of what is commonly known as a semi-automatic quick coupler.

Mark Anthony of Demolition News said:

When I see a product that could potentially save lives and remove a huge amount of confusion from an industry that remains puzzled over the use of semi-automatic quick hitches, I have no hesitation in backing it 100%. (Interestingly, my endorsement is shared by someone with a far greater knowledge of the subject, NFDC chief executive Howard Button).

You can see a couple of videos explaining the Quick Switch system below:
