Working well together

Following on from C&D’s recent success at the World Demolition Awards in the Collaboration category and a similar training day earlier in the year, we are pleased to announce yet another great example of how a number of agencies working together can make a very positive difference.

In this instance, C&D have teamed up with the Health and Safety Executive, the Working Well Together charity, and the National Demolition Training Group to provide a number of free sessions of Asbestos Awareness training sessions to local small businesses and the self-employed. We will be providing the training, the HSE and WWT the publicity, and the NDTG have kindly agreed to provide the UKATA approved certification.

The very good news is that all the sessions are now booking well with over a week to go. This means that nearly 30 people will benefit from gaining this knowledge, which hopefully will prevent them from suffering from a truly horrible disease in the future.

Well done to all of us!

GBL Midlands Limited start to "Upskill" the team

With a new football season starting last weekend all the papers are talking about new signings to improve the teams and better coaching to get more out of the existing teams. So could we apply the same thinking to demolition companies?

GBL Midlands Limited, owned by Luke Timmins, have decided that their 'team' needs upskilling to meet the challenges of working in demolition and keep them in the hunt for improved order levels. For the last few years training has been done on a "needs must" basis as work has been tight and margins tighter, but now Luke feels the time is right to change that ethos.

"It has always been my goal to train my guys to the highest standards as our clients are demanding a better trained, competent workforce, but that has been difficult when work loads have been static. Now that demolition in the Midlands seems to be on the up the time is right to invest in additional training and upskilling"

"We have, for the last few years, used C&D Consultancy for all of our training needs as we like the fact that they train when and where we need it and the trainers have a style that my guys like and vast experience on major jobs that makes the training informative, relevant & enjoyable"

"When we needed a number of our team to undertake CCDO assessments to move through the card scheme, we contacted NDTG and asked if those assessments could also be done by C&D. We were delighted to find that they could. The assessments were done on site within 7 days of the forms arriving at NDTG and we are now waiting for the cards, so it was a simple quick process for us. We will now look to NDTG and C&D to carry out more assessments over the next few months"

Since we spoke to Luke to write this article GBL Midlands have been back in touch to book Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, Hot Works and Risk Assessment courses to continue the upskilling. Onwards and Upwards working in partnership with C&D.

Further details on all of the courses we offer can be found at our Demolition Training website and booked via stuart@demolishdismantle.co.uk

NDTG launches free seminar for Training Administrators

The NDTG realises there is a lot of pressure placed on the administration team within a demolition company, simply by the work load they have ensuring everyone's training and cards are up-to-date.

With that in mind, free seminars are being offered as a way of helping.

The seminars will be delivered by Group Manager, Sophie Cox, Centre Coordinator, Kaila Francis, and NDTG Scotland's Shona Farrell.

The NDTG describe the seminar as follows:

"The Group have developed a half day seminar aimed at those administration professionals seeking guidance on all things demolition training. Taking a step by step approach through requirements and processes, the seminar will also give delegates the opportunity to meet with the NDTG team and peers who deal with the same day to day challenges faced by those responsible for organising and monitoring training and qualifications for those on the ground."

The course is free to members, with the following dates and locations confirmed:

27th Mar 2014, 10am
NDTG Ltd, Resurgam House, Paradise, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, HP2 4TF

25th Apr 2014, 10am
University of Birmingham

2nd May 2014, 10am
Northern Safety Ltd, 109B Allison Avenue, Teeside Industrial Estate, Thornaby, Middlesborough, TS17 9LY

If you'd like to know more, either email NDTG or phone them directly on 01442 217144

NDTG expands its training coverage into Gibraltar

UK demolition training leads the World so it was no surprise that when the Gibraltar government wanted to train their Technical Services Department in the management of demolition projects they decided to contact NDTG.

The initial contact was made to Group Manager Sophie Cox in 2010 who proposed an amended version of the NDTG Demolition for Clients course written by John Woodward at C&D. Full details of the course content, learning objectives and learning outcomes was forwarded to the government for approval.

Despite the need for the course, funding had to be secured. It took four years for that to be achieved and a date to be set. In that time Sophie Cox had handed over all negotiations to Kaila Francis who was left with the job to win the order and arrange delivery of the course as required.

After many emails back and forth Kaila managed to agree the course dates of 3rd-6th February 2014 and then arranged for John Woodward to fly out to "The Rock" and deliver the training.

The training was well received, particularly the group work sessions that can be seen in the attached photos and video, and feedback indicated that the course was excellent, so much so that the Government are now negotiating with Kaila for further courses (Demolition Supervisor and Simulator) over the next twelve months.

IDE Vice President Duncan Rudall co-facilitates NDTG Demolition Manager Course in January

Since it's inception the NDTG Demolition Manager Course has been delivered by John or Roy Brown, but changes are afoot in 2014 as Duncan Rudall is joining John on the January intake in Birmingham with a view to assisting with revising the course content and delivering future courses.

NDTG and C&D have agreed that the course requires updating and it will, therefore, be updated after the January intake with Duncan assisting with the update following his attendance on the course as a co-facilitator.

Duncan is a self employed demolition trainer and consultant who works closely with C&D to deliver quality training throughout the UK.

The photograph shows Duncan receiving his IDE Vice President scroll from current IDE President Steve Jack.
