Massive natural gas tank to be imploded

A huge natural gas tank, measuring 281 feet in circumference and 258 feet tall, is set to be imploded. The tank is owned by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. and sits on a 26-acre site, but hasn't been used since being retired from service in 1997.

The tank served as a natural gas store for 60 years after it was purchased with the land by BGE in 1932. A choice had to be made either to paint and maintain the tank or remove it from the site. The bill for painting it went into the millions, so the tank is set to disappear from the skyline instead.

Preparation to implode the tank have been underway for over a month, but the actual date of the implosion is being kept a secret. What BGE doesn't want is people descending on the area to watch it come down. Instead they will announce the date and time at the last minute and ensure cameras are in place to capture the tank coming down.
