Solway Harvester fishing trawler demolition has begun

The Solway Harvester scallop dredger was wrecked some 13 years ago in January of the year 2000. It took with it the lives of seven Galloway men. Now the wreck is finally being demolished, with the dredger expected to be removed completely before Christmas.

The demolition has been organized by the Isle of Man government because the wreck was in Manx territorial waters, off the coast of Ramsey. It was later salvaged and has sat moored in Douglas Harbour.

As for what caused the sinking, an investigation found that the fish room had flooded to the point where the dredger had capsized. The crew probably didn't notice until it was too late due to a flood alarm that didn't work and a hatch cover that was missing. The weather also didn't help, with a Force 9 gale blowing.
