One thing you can guarantee when a theme park company purchases a piece of land, is that whatever buildings exist on the site are going to be demolished. That's the future facing Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre as it has been announced theme park Flamingo Land has made a bid for the site.
The 2,150-seat Futurist Theatre is the only indoor venue in Scarborough capable of hosting shows involving touring theatre groups and musical productions. That seems likely to end if Flamingo's bid is successful. They intend to build a glass-roofed botanical garden, rollercoaster, function rooms, and restaurant at the location.
Although many would mourn the loss of such a venue, something does need to happen. The council-owned theatre has been closed since early 2014 and the costs of continuing to run it or even maintain it are seen as unsustainable. What follows now is many months of planning and negotiations before we learn what the final fate of the theatre is.
