Demolition of the Western Tower and Friars Walk Shopping Centre in Reading has begun

July 2014 saw the reopening of the railway station in Reading by the Queen. It cost £897 million to update the station, and now it's time for nearby buildings to get the same treatment, albeit by being demolished to make way for redevelopment.

The 15 storey Western Tower and Friars Walk Shopping Centre are both next to the new railway station, and demolition of both has now begun. It's going to be a complex job due to their location, but contractors Stanhope and TE Scudder are more than up to the challenge.

When the sites have been cleared there are plans to construct apartments, new offices, and a number of shops for local residents and visitors passing through the revamped railway station.
