Steve Jobs' home can now never be demolished

Steve Jobs passed away a couple of years ago, but his legacy lives on, as do the locations key to his success. One of those locations is the Los Altos home he grew up in. A home Job's stepmother Marilyn Jobs still lives in to this day.

The reason it is such a significant location is not just because it is where Jobs grew up. It's because the garage was where Jobs and Steve Wozniak constructed the first 50 Apple 1 computers way back in 1976.

Now the house can never be demolished or any significant work done to it without prior approval as it has been officially protected as a historical site. The Los Altos Historical Commission decided to make it so earlier this week, which will only add to its value and attractiveness to tourists for many years to come.

Steve Jobs has died aged 56

The news is dominated today by the passing of Steve Jobs, a man who has influenced most people's lives either directly or indirectly. As a business man he was a visonary, and the fact Apple's share price is now fighting with Exxon for top spot in the markets is a clear sign of that. Under his leadership Apple's share price went from $10 to $400.

If you own an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac, then you have Steve Jobs to thank for that. But equally so, if you own a smartphone, a thin and light laptop, or a digital music player that fits in your pocket, regardless of the brand it carries, Steve Jobs had a hand in creating it purely by pushing Apple's competitors to try and outdo the company's own products.

His final gift to the world hasn't actually been created yet. It's a building unlike any other that has no straight lines. A 150-acre curved, doughnut-shaped new headquarters for Apple in Cupertino that is not only meant to be the best working environment for those people contained within it, but an area rejuvinated and promoting nature next to the technology it will allow great minds to create.

Steve Jobs has had a major impact on the technology we choose to carry in our pockets today, and will continue to do so for many years to come. The fact he died at 56 robs us of what other ideas he had forming in his mind and probably a couple of decades of further innovation.

Apple introduce the iPad

Although this is a website focused on demolition, we all use mobile gadgets every day and the iPhone must sit in a few of your pockets. So we thought it was appropriate to give you a heads-up on the latest device from the boffins at Apple.

Apple announced their next killer gadget yesterday and called it the iPad. It is not a replacement for the iPhone and it won't do phone calls. What it is meant to offer is a one stop device for all your media (music, video, books), and a replacement for the newspaper.



It has a 9.7" touchscreen display, measures on 0.5" thick, and has a battery that lasts 10 hours (30 days standby time). UK pricing has yet to be announced, but prices start at $500 in the US going up to $829 for the top model. There will also be an optional contract for unlimited data across the mobile network AT&T for $30 a month. In the UK that will likely mean £30 a month and £600+ for the device.



Why would you want one of these devices? Well, if you do a lot of reading on the go, need to respond to e-mail, enjoy your daily newspaper, and also want to surf the web, then iPad will do it all, and with a footprint much smaller and lighter than a laptop.
