FREE Construction Safety and Health Awareness Day

On November 14th a free Construction Safety and Health Awareness Day is being run at the Park Hall Hotel and Leisure Club, Park Hall Road, Charnock Richard, Chorley, Lancashire, PR7 5LP.

This is one of a series of free partnership events run by the industry for the industry, as part of the UK-wide Working Well Together (WWT) campaign.

The aim is not only to raise awareness of key health and safety issues facing the construction industry specific to your trade, but also to give practical advice on how to avoid risks on construction sites.

If you have a small building, construction or contracting company, or if you are self-employed and would like up to date advice to help you get to grips with health and safety, this free half-day event is a must.

C&D awarded another Demolition Project CDM-C appointment

Just when you think that all new orders for January are in, another drops into the in box. C&D are pleased to have been appointed as CDM-C for a demolition project in Darwen, Lancashire. This small project is for the demolition of a cooling tower and will be carried out by Frank O'Gara and Sons of Irlam.

Work commences this month and will be completed in around 6 weeks.

Prosecution for cinema collapse on dual carriageway in Lancashire

In June last year an art deco cinema turned bingo hall collapsed on to a busy dual carriageway in Lancashire.

The building in Thornton Cleveleys broke through the scaffolding around it and spread rubble across two lanes of the A587. To make matters worse this happened during rush hour.

The HSE investigation found a number of failings on the part of demolition company Gaskells Demolition Services.

The scaffolding was not meant to hold the structure, only to allow access to it. Even so, there were not sufficient exclusion zones around the building, and road closures had not been requested through the local council. In fact, the company was lucky no one was injured or killed, although one pedestrian suffered a near miss.

Gaskells has admitted its guilt for the lack of safety and will pay fines totalling £8,000.
