HSE changes the way that incidents are reported

On 12 September 2011 new incident reporting arrangements came into effect which means that only fatal and major injuries and incidents can now be reported by phone to HSE.

All other work-related injuries and incidents reportable under RIDDOR have to be reported via one of the seven online forms available on the HSE website.

In addition, the HSE's Infoline telephone service has ended and persons seeking information and official guidance are now being directed to the HSE website.

HSE moving injury and incident reporting online

There's little doubt that the Internet is growing in importance both as a communication and work tool. While in the past we all used to rely on paper and pen, and documents sent via Royal Mail, the world has gone digital meaning information reaches its destination in seconds not days.

The Health and Safety Executive is one such organisation moving with the times, and come this September one area of their services is becoming predominantly a digital affair.

From September this year reporting of incidents and injuries will become a task done online. More specifically, reporting such incidents under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995) will be a task carried out on your Internet-connected computer.

Two important things are happening to support this move. First of all, the forms used to report incidents online are being updated to make the process easier and more straightforward. Second, the HSE Infoline telephone service is being terminated as of September 30th.

Those worried that the resource offered by the infoline will be missed should turn their attention to the HSE website which has all the information you could possibly want or need without the issues of actually getting through to someone on a phone call. The information is there 24hrs a day accessible from any computer with an Internet connection.
