£350,000 a year derelict supermarket to be demolished

What do you do with a derelict supermarket that is costing £350,000 a year to maintain? Get rid of it as quickly as possible I'd say.

The derelict Sainsbury's site in Newcastle-Under-Lyme is costing Staffordshire County Council and Newcastle Borough Council exactly that every 12 months, so they have decided to demolish the building.

If you're wondering how a derelict building can cost hundreds of thousands to maintain, then look to insurance, business rates, and electricity bills for your answer. With the building demolished, though, such costs will disappear and the site will be marketed for redevelopment. It's worth noting that the old supermarket car park on the site was generating around £175,000 in parking charges, so if nothing else a giant car park could be opened on the site while redevelopment plans are finalized.

Thomas Vale Construction really wants to meet suppliers in Staffordshire

Thomas Vale Construction is putting the call out to any and all local suppliers in the Staffordshire area. The reason? They want to bid for major construction contracts in the Staffordshire area, and they'll need local support to do it. So whether your trade is plumbing, roofing, landscaping, glazing, carpentry, waste management or anything else that contributes to a major construction project, you could be just what they’re looking for.

In order to meet as many suppliers as possible Thomas Vale has decided to organise an event on Thursday, 22nd August beginning at 7:30am and running to 11am. The venue is Staffordshire County Showground (ST18 0BD) and admission is free along with a complimentary breakfast. The meetings will all be on a one-to-one basis, with each expected to take no more than 5 minutes.
