October 18th Presentation: Demolition at Aston University

On October 18th there is a presentation being given at the Wolverhampton Science Park that may interest many of our readers. It is entitled "Demolition at Aston University" and has been planned by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellent (WMCCE).

The presentation will cover the recent demolition of two 1970's tower blocks at Aston University. Robin Powell of DSM Demolition will be giving the talk, which includes coverage of the job planning and use of explosives to raise the towers to the ground.

Question Time with Paul Morrell 18th October

Paul Morrell, Government’s Chief Construction Advisor, is heading to the Edgbaston Cricket Ground on the 18th October to field your questions on the recently published Construction Strategy in a special Question Time event.  

Included in the batting line up on the panel are Julia Evans, Chief Exec NFB and Mark Wakeford, MD of Stepnell Construction. A representative from Birmingham City Council will complete the team and Dhiran Vagdia has kindly agreed to umpire proceedings. Dhiran is a former regional chair of RIBA of and FORCE best practice club.

Environmental Awareness Training course 27th September

On the 27th September there is an Environmental Awareness Training course being run at Birmingham Science Park Aston. The venue is the WMCCE, Faraday Wharf with speakers including John Sharpe FRICS and Andrew Fletcher BSc (Hons) CEnv MRICS.

The cost is £100 +VAT per attendee. In return you will get to hear about the following topics:

• Awareness of global, national and local environmental issues
• Different approaches to environmental management and systems from ‘real life’ examples
• Identification of environmental issues in the workplace
• Identification of ways to reduce environmental impact
• Two interactive workshops designed for the delegate to implement environmental improvement to their workplace

The course is aimed at directors, managers, and supervisors, but is suitable for anyone who wants to understand the broad environmental issues of any organisation. It's especially of interest if in your role or company the following questions need to be answered:
