Last week we reported on C&D customer Windmill Demolition demolishing the sausage bridge over the M62 near Huyton. It meant closing the motorway for a weekend, but while that may have frustrated drivers, it did allow for a camera to be setup to record the job. What you see above is a timelapse video of the entire demolition process. Fantastic work by Windmill.

C&D assist Windmill Demolition with project management on sausage bridge removal

C&D helped Windmill Demolition with project management during the demolition of the so-called sausage bridge over the M62 near Huyton last weekend.

The pedestrian bridge called the Greystone footbridge had come to the end of its lifetime, and the M62 was closed over the weekend to ensure its safe removal. A new, modern footbridge is planned which will also cater for cyclists. However, it is not due to be open to the public until October 19th, with the installation happening on October 10-11th, when the M62 will be closed once again.

C&D customer Windmill Demolition in emergency demolition of fire damaged building

A fire has completely gutted a block of 50 flats in Wigan. The problem is, it's unclear how the fire started (although a barbecue is suspected) and the structure isn't deemed safe enough to go in and investigate. Demolition is coming to the rescue though.

C&D customer Windmill Demolition is on site and aiding the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and investigators to get to the bottom of the blaze. It has been agreed that the top two floors will be demolished to allow the investigation to continue. A hydraulic platform is also being raised and used to take thermal image scans ensuring no more fires are brewing.

While this is going on 50 residents have to be housed. They spent the first night in a local Premiere Inn, but the local council is busy creating a "housing cell" at Mill at the Pier for longer term temporary housing. With the flats gutted, and now in a state of demolition, they could be there a while.

Demolition worker killed by excavator bucket, HSE prosecutes

Two individuals and one company have been prosecuted for the death of John Cain, 36 in 2004. Cain was struck by an excavator bucket while working on a demolition site in Salford.

The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted due to a number of health and safety offences which otherwise would have prevented his death.

HSE Inspector Stuart Kitchingman said:

"This case demonstrates how important it is for contractors to be aware of their health and safety duties, especially when there are several companies working on a project.

Barry Godliman and Robert Watson were the principal contractors on the site and so should have made sure all work was carried out safely. Windmill Demolition had been hired to oversee and carry out the demolition work, and so had responsibilities for managing safety as well.

I hope this case will encourage construction companies to do more to manage health and safety on sites effectively."


Barry Godliman and Robert Watson pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by failing to ensure the safety of workers on the site. In total they £9,500 each in fines and costs.

Windmill Demolition was found guilty of the same offences and fined £15,000.
