Hole in one proves a great fundraiser for new Wolves ‘shirt’ book

A new book designed to showcase the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers shirts is well on course to raise £20,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

‘They Wore The Shirt’, the brainchild of die-hard supporter Steve Plant, held its latest event at Enville Golf Club last week, with a clutch of former players and local businesses joining forces to generate funds to help purchase vital life-saving equipment.

Sponsored by Polypipe Ltd and C&D Consultancy, the day went with a real swing as 18 teams – featuring Kenny Hibbitt, Steve Daley, Phil Parkes, Mel Eves and Phil Nicholls – teed off to bring in over £3300…£1200 more than expected.

The winning team was E P Lynch Plumbing and Heating, who narrowly beat off competition from REW and Ideal Standard in a fiercely fought last few holes.

“Black Country companies never fail to amaze me with their generosity and the latest golf day was no different, with everyone digging deep for the cause,” commented Steve Plant.

“They Wore The Shirt came about after I started collecting matchworn shirts as a way of keeping my father’s spirits up, who was fighting cancer. There was lots of interest in my home collection and the website I created, so I knew people would get behind a book that chronicled the full collection of Wolves kits.”

He continued: “I wanted the project to benefit a good cause so I contacted my friend Neil Taylor to see if all the money raised in sponsorship could go towards Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“We set our sights on reaching £20,000 over the course of the year and I think we’re well on course. The golf day has really moved us forward.”

Over 106 different shirts have been photographed so far as part of the book and Steve is currently working with Wolverhampton Wanderers and former journalist David Instone to ensure each chapter of history is marked with facts, memories and other local events from that era.

Current captain Danny Batth has added his support with a foreword and the publication will also feature Roy Swinbourne’s shirt worn in the famous victory over Budapest Honved FC in 1954.

“That was my father’s favourite ever game so means a lot to me, as does the George Elokobi shirt that started my collection off,” explained Steve, who has been following the club home and away since 1971.

He concluded: “We are only going to print 1877 copies to mark the year we were formed and these will be available from the Wolves club shop and potentially online from October 2016.

“The old gold and black is an iconic sports shirt. Everyone knows it around the entire world and this book will celebrate that.”

Golf Day gets coverage on BBC Radio Shropshire

Last week we attended the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Golf Day in Bridgnorth organised by Jason Guy of First 4 Staff. It went off without a hitch.

Legendary ‘All Blacks’ No.8 Zinzan Brooke in attendance along with a great turnout of former Wolves players including Mel Eves / Steve Daley / Phil Parkes / Gerry Taylor / Steve Bull / Robbie Dennison / John Richards / Barry Powell / Kenny Hibbitt / Willie Carr / Dale Rudge and Don Goodman.

So many well known names were sure to draw a crowd and some coverage, including on BBC Radio Shropshire. You can hear what they had to say by visiting the link below and jumping to the 2 hour 51 minute mark.

The golf day also received a great write-up on Bdaily business news, which you can read here:

https://bdaily.co.uk/entrepreneurship/01-05-2015/brooke-and-bully-tee-off-to-support-charity

Our very own John Woodward concludes in the article:

We do a lot of work with First 4 Staff and was delighted to co-sponsor this event with Jason and his team.

To play golf with sporting legends is one thing, but to be able to do so whilst raising money for such an important charity is fantastic. It just shows what the Black Country business community can achieve when it pulls together for a common cause.

Wolves pub The Wanderer could be demolished before the end of 2014

The Wanderer pub, formerly The Fox, located in Molinuex Street, Wolverhampton may now be demolished before the end of the year.

The pub used to be a regular haunt for Wolves fans, but last year it was closed after a mystery buyer purchased it. That turned out to be Wolves football club, who's intention it is to demolish the building and open up more parking for the nearby stadium.

Locals are not impressed, with Ian Stringer, chairman of the Wolverhampton branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), making the point that the pub should be a viable business.

2,300 fans have signed a petition asking for the pub to be saved, but it has yet to be handed to Wolverhampton Council.

Arne Marx from Genesis visits C&D Consultancy, goes home a Wolves fan!

Well known Genesis attachments salesman, and good friend of C&D Consultancy and Demolition News, Arne Marx has been in the UK for a sales visit and he called into C&D to stay for the weekend. He expected to discuss attachment jaw sizes and quick hitch cradles, only to find that he was going to see Wolves v Stoke City at Molineux!

His first taste of premier league football saw a fine 2-1 win for Wolves (who played like Brazil), a pre match visit to a traditional Wolves fan's pub with real ale, followed with his first taste of a roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce cob from the street vendors outside the ground.

This unique experience, described by John Woodward of C&D as “Bostin”, seems to have changed Arne as the photograph below sees him receiving a Wolves leisure shirt as a souvenir that he has vowed to wear whilst at home in Germany, and whenever he and John meet up at European demolition industry events.

Armac begins Wolverhampton bus station demolition

Wolverhampton bus station in Pipers Row has started being demolished one day early by Armac Group.

Many, including local councillors and residence, are viewing the demolition as the start of the city's regeneration. The site is destined to be rebuilt as a linked bus and train station as part of a £176 million interchange project.

Wolverhampton City Councillor Paddy Bradley said:

"This will bring jobs, better transport links and money to Wolverhampton.

It’s importance cannot be understated and to now actually be able to see the development finally starting is a real confidence boost for the city and for the people of Wolverhampton.

And this is just the start. Stage two which will link the interchange to the train station is still very much something we are working to make happen. It’s an exciting time.
