RPE (RESPIRATORY PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT)
EMPLOYEE AWARENESS & FIT TEST
Introduction
The requirement for RPE training and Face Mask Fit Testing is described in the Approved Code of Practices supporting:
HASAW 1974
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002
The Control of Lead at Work Regulations (CLAW) 2002
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006
Face mask fit testing is a legal requirement for suitability of RPE by checking that a tight fitting face mask matches the person's facial features and seals adequately to the wearer's face. It will also help ensure that incorrectly fitting face masks are not selected for use.
Inadequate fit is not in compliance with the law and will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer. Any reduction in protection can put the RPE wearer's life in danger or may lead to immediate or long term ill health. Correct fitting of the face masks at all times is vital to prevent exposure.
Aims
The course will help ensure compliance with the law covering suitability of RPE selection, use, maintenance and Fit Testing in line with current Legislation. The purpose of the test is simply to ensure that the chosen mask actually fits the wearer and has the potential, if correctly worn, to offer the minimum level of protection it is designed for.
The Course includes:
* Legislation
* Employee awareness
* Risks and dangers of incorrectly fitting masks
* Importance of selecting correct RPE
* Face mask fit demonstration
* Looking after RPE
* Individual face mask fit & evaluation
