HSE Asbestos Awareness Update

The HSE have launched a new campaign to reiterate the dangers of asbestos. Recent research has shown that, particularly among the young, although there is an awareness of the dangers from asbestos, there is a tendency to think that they personally will not be affected by it.

Every year for several more years, more people will die from asbestos related diseases than will be killed in road traffic accidents. Everyone now accepts the requirement and uses a seat belt when driving – we need this degree of understanding and acceptance of personal safety equipment by site operatives likely to be exposed to the fibres. Many young tradespeople consider the problem to now be a thing of the past because the material has been banned for many years; this is of course far from reality and work in or on any building constructed before 2000 could bring you into contact with asbestos.

It should be remembered that this is not just a matter of looking for flat and corrugated sheeting – asbestos can be found embedded in many materials including paint, floor tiles, and textured ceiling coatings. The British Lung Foundation are urging everyone involved in working on and managing sites to remain vigilant.

The HSE has an excellent guide to asbestos which you can access by clicking here
