August 2008 Newsletter Available

The C&D Consultancy August Newsletter is now available for download

This issue of the newsletter reminds you of the dangers of working with cranes, working at height and the safe working conditions that should be maintained when working on scaffolding. You will find Ten Commandments for health and safety which should be followed and adhered to, to prevent such incidents. The importance of attention to supervision of our trainees' health and safety needs is also emphasised by a warning from the HSE.

Training courses are vital for your employees to give them a better understanding and knowledge of health and safety, their obligations and job specific requirements. Ensuring your operatives have an awareness and have received the necessary training is the only way to prevent an accident before it happens.

Harpreet Bahra has now joined us as our Training Co-ordinator. She was formally employed by the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and is now here to answer all your training queries. Please contact her to book your courses now.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue and would welcome any comments/feedback from you.

HSE Asbestos Awareness Update

The HSE have launched a new campaign to reiterate the dangers of asbestos. Recent research has shown that, particularly among the young, although there is an awareness of the dangers from asbestos, there is a tendency to think that they personally will not be affected by it.

Every year for several more years, more people will die from asbestos related diseases than will be killed in road traffic accidents. Everyone now accepts the requirement and uses a seat belt when driving – we need this degree of understanding and acceptance of personal safety equipment by site operatives likely to be exposed to the fibres. Many young tradespeople consider the problem to now be a thing of the past because the material has been banned for many years; this is of course far from reality and work in or on any building constructed before 2000 could bring you into contact with asbestos.

It should be remembered that this is not just a matter of looking for flat and corrugated sheeting – asbestos can be found embedded in many materials including paint, floor tiles, and textured ceiling coatings. The British Lung Foundation are urging everyone involved in working on and managing sites to remain vigilant.

The HSE has an excellent guide to asbestos which you can access by clicking here

Remember: if you don't know what it is – treat it as asbestos.

Above all do not let anyone 'scrape a bit of it off to see' – call in the experts immediately.
