Implosion of Murray-Courtright smokestack

On Friday last week the 30 metre smokestack at the Murray-Courtright demolition site in Pennsylvania came down.

Although historians had attempted to save the structure their efforts failed. 33 pounds of explosive later, and an enthusiastic mayor pushing the trigger saw the stack fall quite precisely.

Doug Loizeaux of Controlled Demolition, Inc. which carried out the work commented:

"That couldn’t have gone better. We thought it was going to fall to the west, but the way it went down was perfect."

Although historians may be upset to lose the smokestack, local residents aren't. The rundown site attracted the homeless who used the buildings for shelter. It also had a negative impact on local property prices. Now the site will be developed for new housing.
