Armac “rub out” Sherbourne Wharf
Armac have continued to be busy in June in Birmingham by “rubbing out” the Sherbourne Rubber Factory at Icknield Square, Sherbourne Wharf. The factory that used to produce rubber items of all types has been demolished to free up the waterside site for an exciting new housing development for Places for People.
The main factory unit was built with pin hinge jointed columns to counteract the lateral forces imposed on the building by the large overhead crane. This unusual building method meant that Armac Operations Director and IDE Member Adrian McLean had to spend some time considering many alternatives before choosing the actual demolition method.
As Armac operate a large fleet of modern machines they were able to bring additional machines to site to carry out the demolition and the photographs show the machines working within the pin hinge jointed section of the works.
