No choice but to demolish Manchester Courts in Christchurch

Christchurch City councillors in New Zealand have said there is no choice but to demolish the city's first ever commercial high-rise building called the Manchester Courts.

The building is 104-years-old, but according to councillors the heritage building is damgerous and therefore a demolition warrant has been issued bypassing the lengthy resource consent process.

Opponents to the planned demolition say that reports stating the building is dangerous do not contain enough detail to make such a judgement.

Anna Crighton, spokeswoman for the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, even offered to buy the building for the asking price of $1. That offer has apparently been rejected.

According to Richard Peebles, co-owner of the building, the structure is in a very bad state:

The building is much worse then first thought. It's an absolute miracle it is still there. It is being held up by its own weight.
