Jet washing a roof without fall protection leads to £17,000 fine

They say that people do the strangets things. Well, we'd like to add to that by saying that some companies do the stupidest of things like not providing roof protection to someone working two storeys up on a surface being sprayed with water.

The HSE issued a prohibition notice in May 2010 to M&D Roof Coatings after one of their employees was spotted jet washing a roof. As you can see in the image, he had absolutely no protection meaning no scaffolding, and no edge protection. It was just him on a roof with a power washer.

The lack of safety has cost M&D £17,000 (£10,00 fine and £7,000 costs) being charged with a breash of Regulation 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. At the time the work was stopped by HSE inspectors which may have actually saved the worker's life.
