70 primary school kids exposed to asbestos in science lab
In a reminder of how much asbestos is still present in public buildings, 70 children in a primary school were exposed to the material when a science experiment had an unexpected side effect.
Kids at St. Mary's in Kintbery, Hungerford were involved in an experiment using a hydrogen balloon. The balloon caused a sonic reaction that made dust fall from the ceiling tiles as they moved. That dust contained asbestos from insulating boards in the roof.
As a precaution the children's uniforms were taken for testing and P.E. kits were worn home that afternoon. The room has understandably been sealed off.
The good news is the level of asbestos found in the dust was very low.
