JusticeNewsFlash has a great article up discussing the risk of unwittingly coming into contact with asbestos. In the trade it is known as indirect asbestos exposure, secondhand asbestos exposure, or simply take-home asbestos.
What is take-home asbestos? It's asbestos fibres that get transported on clothing, shoes, or other items that travel from an area where asbestos is being handled. The end result can be just as dangerous and deadly depending on where the rogue fibres end up.
The advice for avoiding this are simple, and here's a summary:
- Change clothers before leaving a site where asbestos is being handled
- Shower before coming into contact with anyone else
- Keep all work clothes and equipment separate from your main living areas
- Be vigilant, maybe you are working on a site where asbestos is present but you haven't been informed--in this case ask questions
