Stronger alternative to concrete created

Unless you are building some form of eco-house, you'd expect to see concrete uses in the construction of a new build. It is by far the strongest material we have for creating the foundation of a house, or the shell of a much larger building.

But the days of using concrete may be numbered as a new material has been developed that is twice as strong as concrete, requires hardly any steel reinforcement, and only take 24 hrs to be fully hardened.

The new material is called CO2 Structure and has been developed by TIS&Partners. It requires the injection of an organic material like an epoxy or urethane, but can be shaped very easily and retains its strength with little to no reinforcement.

It has been developed in response to the recent earthquakes in Japan where rapid rebuilding and increased building strength are both desirable. Looking ahead, this material could revolutionise the building industry not only due to its strength, but because there is no heavy steel reinforcement required, meaning transporting it to site will take less time and be far cheaper.
