A 24-year-old electro-mechanical engineer, British trial bike champion, and well-known surfer by the name of Gavin Bedford died because of a lack of planning and resources on a demolition site.
The site in question was the Llantrisant factory in South Wales. Gerber Juice, now trading as Refresco Gerber UK Ltd, has been prosecuted and was found to have not appointed a Principal Contractor or CDD-C, and therefore overlooked hazards during the decommissioning work. A 300kg piping structure subsequently collapsed causing critical head injuries to Bedford, who died three days later in hospital.
If you are planning to do any demolition, dismantling or decommissioning works then you need to seek competent advice and discharge your duties under CDM2007.
Before you decide to go ahead why not call or email us for a no obligation discussion of what you need to do.
Ignorance of the CDM process can, as in this case, lead to fatalities.
