Fabio Bruno implodes the Hospital Santa Monica

Whilst Fabio was speaking at the World Demolition Summit im Amsterdam his team carried on the good work in his absence and imploded the Hospital Santa Monica in Niteroi, Rio.

The demolition took place at 8am last Friday, used 150kg of explosives, and took around 13 seconds to come down. The State Government of Rio is planning to construct a new Center for Diagnostic Imaging on the site.

Construction worker walks away from steel rod piercing skull

A construction worker wearing a hard hat is deemed as taking the necessary precaution to protect their head from injury. But there's only so much a hard hat can do.

Eduardo Leite was wearing his hard hat while on a construction site in Rio de Janeiro, but it wasn't enough to stop a 6-foot long metal pole piercing his skull after falling five floors.

The pole pierced his skull midway back and came out the other side lower down and between his two eyes. Survival was surely not a possibility, but sure enough Eduardo has walked away from the incident. He even arrived at the hospital conscious explaining what had happened.

It took doctors several hours of surgery, which also saw Eduardo's right eye saved and risk of partial paralysis averted. His total recovery, without brain damage, is expected to only take a few weeks. Incredible.

Brazil implosion by Fabio Bruno featured in BBC "Wonders" series

Last year C&D Consultancy were approached, via DemolitionNews, by the BBC for help in arranging the filming of a building implosion for the new Prof. Brian Cox series “Wonders”.

We offered them the chance to film one of the series of GHA, Glasgow implosions but they felt that Glasgow was not warm enough or exotic enough for this fantastic series so we managed to arrange with our friend Fabio Bruno for them to fly to Rio and film one of his implosions.

At the time the BBC invited me to go out to Rio for the filming but flight times, and plane changes twice in Madrid and Paris, meant that I couldn't be there to witness it. However the BBC have now released the following video that shows the footage used in the series and the excellent implosion achieved by Fabio.

As we find more videos we'll add them. If you spot one we don't have please let us know.

and here's the simulation of how it was meant to happen:
