My Dad does Demolition crosses the pond

Joint authors of My Dad Does Demolition--John Woodward & Mark Anthony--are delighted that Bill Moore (judge of the World Demolition Awards in Amsterdam in November) liked the book so much that he ordered one for his grandson Jake.

Here is what Bill said when he sent through a picture of his grandson with the book:

"As promised, here's a picture I had taken yesterday after giving your book to my grandson, Jake, at his 8th birthday party.

My son, John, is 36 and is the general superintendent for Alpine Demolition, a suburban Chicago demolition contractor.

Jake may be the 3rd generation "wrecker"?

Thanks again for the great book!
"

We've also received picture proof from our friend and explosive demolition expert Fabio Bruno that My Dad Does Demolition has now reached Brazil!

You can still obtain copies via eBay.

More speakers confirmed for World Demolition Summit

It's always great to hear that new speakers are being confirmed for the World Demolition Summit, and we have some more to announce:

David Mardigian from MCM Corporation - speaking about decommissioning the former Bethlehem Steel Sparrow Point plant in Maryland, which counts as the largest industrial clean-up currently under way in the country.

Our friend Fabio Bruno Pinto is also flying in from Brazil to talk about a bridge implosion in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Attendees of last year's Summit will remember he discussed the planning of this implosion. This year he will discuss how it went.

The World Demolition Summit 2014 occurs in Amsterdam on November 6th. If you'd like to attend then please visit the World Demolition Summit website for more information.

Stadium demolition in Brazil makes way for 2014 World Cup

The 2014 FIFA World Cup may still be 3 years away, but at least demolition fans are going to have some memorable moments in the run up to the tournament.

A World Cup of course means stadiums that can hold tens of thousands of people, and a spectacle for the world. So Brazil, the hosts in 2014, want to make sure they provide facilities that are worthy of the event. That means demolishing old buildings and stadiums to make way for new ones.

The video included below is just one example of this redevelopment. Of course, our friend Fabio Bruno is involved, and although details are scarce at the moment, it looks as though controlled implosions of the Castelão Stadium will be carried out. As you can see, having the rest of the stadium still standing helps to control the dust.

We look forward to seeing more of these World Cup 2014 implosions.

Brazil implosion by Fabio Bruno featured in BBC "Wonders" series

Last year C&D Consultancy were approached, via DemolitionNews, by the BBC for help in arranging the filming of a building implosion for the new Prof. Brian Cox series “Wonders”.

We offered them the chance to film one of the series of GHA, Glasgow implosions but they felt that Glasgow was not warm enough or exotic enough for this fantastic series so we managed to arrange with our friend Fabio Bruno for them to fly to Rio and film one of his implosions.

At the time the BBC invited me to go out to Rio for the filming but flight times, and plane changes twice in Madrid and Paris, meant that I couldn't be there to witness it. However the BBC have now released the following video that shows the footage used in the series and the excellent implosion achieved by Fabio.

Fabio implodes Rio University Hospital

Our friend Fabio Bruno has just completed one of his most difficult jobs. The difficulty came from the North Wing of the hospital having to remain undamaged.

As you can see, the planning was perfect and this 15-storey 45,000 cubic meter concrete structure came down without a hitch.

Fabio simulates Hospital Universitário do Fundão demolition

On December 19th, our friend Fabio Bruno Pinto, is going to demolish the Hospital Universitário do Fundão. Part of the preparation included producing a simultion video which has has been kind enough to share.

If you're a regular reader you will have seen our previous coverage of Fabio's work including the demolition of a four storey building, and the videos of the Presidio Helio Gomes in Rio de Janeiro.

Another Fabio demolition, this time in Santa Cruz

Yesterday we got to see Fabio Bruno Pinto demolish a four storey building in Rio, Brazil. We wanted more and went searching for other Fabio jobs video footage had been captured for.

The video below is a job Fabio's company carried out in December last year. It's two buildings in Santa Cruz, Rio. We get to see a decent snapshot of the preparation work required before the implosion can take place and the main event happens.

In the end it's another impressive demolition job, and one planned using a simulation similar to that used on the Presidio Helio Gomes.

Presidio Helio Gomes in Rio de Janeiro demolished (videos)

As we mentioned last week, John couldn't make it to Brazil on Saturday to witness the demolition of the Presidio Helio Gomes first hand. But that didn't stop Fabio Bruno Pinto blowing it up, and we now have videos of it happening.

As we find more videos we'll add them. If you spot one we don't have please let us know.

and here's the simulation of how it was meant to happen:

Four-storey build implosion this weekend in Brazil

As reported by Demolition News last month, our friend Fabio Bruno Pinto is carrying out a four-storey 3,700 square metre building implosion tomorrow in Brazil.

The original plan was for the BBC to fly out and film it with our very own John Woodward. Unfortunately the flight times were unworkable for John and that is no longer going to happen. The BBC is still going to be there, though, so we should get some great footage to watch.

Videos of the work will surely appear tomorrow afternoon, but for now check out this simulation of how the building is expected to come down:
