McAuliffe offers free advice, releases hospital site transformation case study

C&D Consultancy customer McAuliffe has released two useful resources recently that may be of benefit to some of our readers.

The first is a case study covering demolition, remediation, and enabling works for Wates Living Space which saw a former hospital in Dudley transformed into a viable development platform for the construction of apartments and houses. The case study can be viewed and downloaded from the McAuliffe website.

The second is the provision by McAuliffe of free materials management advice to housebuilders, with the aim being to help prevent costly mistakes and environmental prosecutions.

According to McAuliffe:

"The team - who recently travelled to Ferrara, Italy, to deliver advice on managing asbestos at RemTech 2016 - will take their expertise straight to clients, presenting at client review meetings.

Topics covered will include demystifying core legislation and common urban myths. This includes how to navigate the CL:AIRE: Waste Code of Practice and implications of the new asbestos in soils (CAR-SOIL) guidance - as recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and Environment Agency."

5,000 pound wrecking ball begins demolishing medical centre

St John's Regional Medical Centre, a hospital in Joplin, was ravaged by a tornado last year and killed six people in the process.

The building has sat empty since May last year, but the work crews have now moved in and a 5,000 pound wrecking ball has the task of bringing the structure down.

The site is expected to be cleared in a little under 2 months.

Demolition of Newton Abbot's hospital begins

The former hospital located in East Street, Newton Abbot, has started being demolished. The work is being carried out by Gilpin Demolition on behalf of Keyworker Homes Ltd.

The hospital has been standing since 1898, but was replaced by a new hospital in 2009 at Jetty Marsh Road. Ever since then the East Street hospital has been laying dormant, but now there are plans to regenerate the site.

The buildings that make up the old hospital are a mix of Georgian and Edwardian designs. The demolition is seen as challenging due to the close proximity of neighbouring buildings, and there is asbestos removal involved too.

Once cleared, Keyworker Homes is investing £25 million to build 53 homes, a 48-apartment retirement complex, a retail area, doctor's surgery, and veterinary clinic. The so-called mini-town will surely bring new people and revenue into the area and make much better use of the space.

Fabio implodes Rio University Hospital

Our friend Fabio Bruno has just completed one of his most difficult jobs. The difficulty came from the North Wing of the hospital having to remain undamaged.

As you can see, the planning was perfect and this 15-storey 45,000 cubic meter concrete structure came down without a hitch.
