You may remember in the middle of last month we posted the video included below of the Allegheny River bridge being imploded. That implosion was a success, but did leave parts of the bridge still needing to be taken down.
Late last week a second round of explosives were used to try and implode the remaining structure. Although it worked on one side of the bridge, the other side remained partially intact.
It used the same 200 pounds of explosive as the first blast, but apparently wasn't enough.
A spokesperson named Tom Fox explained:
"It didn't fall as planned, but from all indications the explosives did their job and the cuts were made in the proper place.
I think about 200 pounds, pretty much similar to the same amount that was used in the first blast. But again, this is just sort of splitting the whole thing in two, and truly, almost as much steel came down this time as did the first time."
Footage taken from a helicopter of the second implosion which clearly shows one side still erect can be watched here. Unfortunately they have disabled the ability to embed the video.
