Company to pay £15,570 for avoidable roof fall accident

A worker sufferes a shattered leg and broken wrist when he fell through a roof in Walmsgate Place, Grimsby in January 2009. The accident could have been avoided and has left the man in constant pain even today.

A HSE investigation found that his employer, H Cope and Sons Ltd. did not perform a check on how the garages of the roof that collapsed were constructed, plus there was inadequate supervision on-site as well as a lack of machinery required to carry out the work correctly.

H Cope and Sons Ltd. pleaded guilty to charges of breaching health and safety regulations and were ordered to pay a £12,000 fine as well as £3,570.80 in costs. The injured man may have to spend the rest of his life in pain and may never be able to work again.
