Plant hire company fined for worker/public asbestos exposure
Mansell Construction Services Ltd. and Woodland Plant Hire Ltd. have been fined after it exposed both workers and the general public to asbestos in 2009.
Mansell and sub-contractor Woodlands were refurbishing a residential block of flats in the London Borough of Hackney. The flats were still occupied, but the insulation boarding being removed was done so by an unlicensed contractor.
Mansell had carried out a survey and found asbestos to be present in that insulation boarding, but neither Mansell nor Woodlands took the necessary precautions during its removal such as using a registered asbestos removal contractor.
Both companies were found guilty after an investigation and prosecution by the HSE. Mansell now has to pay a fine of £50,000 and a further £50,000 fine was incurred by Woodlands. There's also a combined costs payment of £20,690 for the two companies to cover.
