World Demolition Summit and Awards Approaches

The 2016 World Demolition Summit gets underway on Friday at the Marriott Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, USA.

A healthy attendance is expected for this year’s Summit, which is being held outside of Europe for the very first time and features speakers from Europe, North America, New Zealand, and Japan. This is followed by an evening awards dinner celebrating the best in demolition and recycling from a shortlist compiled of entrants from 15 different countries.

C&D Consultancy has a strong presence at the Summit. Demolition Consultant Mike Kehoe will be delivering a talk during the conference that explores the question ‘Can traditional demolition learn from explosive demolition?’

Industry veteran Kehoe joined C&D just over three years ago, running the Liverpool and London offices, and has quickly become recognised as an expert in inner city demolition. He follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who both worked in the demolition industry.

Furthermore, C&D has been shortlisted for two jobs in the Collaboration Award category of the World Demolition Awards.

The first nomination recognises the role C&D played alongside J Bryan Victoria, One Vision Housing and Technical Demolition Services in recovering the demolition of Seaforth Tower in Liverpool earlier this year, after initial explosives failed to bring down the two tower blocks.

The second is for C&D’s work alongside Dem-Master, Safedem, and Keltbray on the New Gorbals Housing Association’s demolition of the high rise flats at Glasgow’s Norfolk Court in May 2016.

“We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the Collaboration Award again this year, having won it in 2015 for our collaboration with Safedem on Whitevale and Bluevale Towers in Glasgow. ” added C&D Lead Consultant, John Woodward.

“It is particularly pleasing that we have been nominated for two jobs. I believe that these collaborative networks have strengthened our reputation as a trouble-shooter and technical expert and contributed towards our growth.”

John concluded: “I am thrilled that our work has been recognised and we are all really looking forward to the awards ceremony. We wish all the other nominees all the best on the night.”

Keep an eye on our website over the next few days to see full details and results from the World Demolition Awards ceremony.

EDA Convention was a big success

If you attended the EDA Convention between June 9-11 in Glasgow, then you likely walked away as we did impressed by the high quality of content this year.

As well as a very friendly exhibitor's area, memorable gala dinner, and a leisure programme that allowed everyone to relax when they needed to, the speakers were all of a very high quality. They included Kenny Crookston of the Wheatley Group, Dave Rowe and Jim O’Sullivan from Keltbray, Carsten Tromp from Jansen Recycling, and Andreas Pocha from the German Demolition Association.

We'd like to thank them all, and can't wait for next year's convention, which takes place in June in Brussels, Belgium.

Congratulations to our friend Mick Williams who has moved from Keltbray to Brown and Mason

Mick Williams is one of the UK's most well-known and experienced explosive demolition engineers, and he has recently completed a move from Keltbray over to demolition, dismantling, and decommissioning company Brown and Mason (BAM).

Our friend Mick has over 750 blasts to his name, both in the UK and further afield, and has accrued more than20 years working in the business. That total will surely surpass 800 blasts before long with BAM having between 20-25 blasting jobs scheduled over the next 2 years. And that's partly why Mick has joined BAM. He enjoyed his time at Keltbray, but they don't have much blasting work planned in the near future.

Expect to see Mick's expertise at work almost immediately on BAM's current work schedule including our power stations at Kingsnorth, Isle of Grain, Teesside and Cockenzie, and at Coryton oil refinery.

So how are they demolishing 20 Fenchurch Street from the bottom up?

Anyone with an interest in demolition heard about the 25-storey building at 20 Fenchurch Street in London back in 2010. It's unusual because Keltbray found that the best way to demolish the building was from the bottom up. To the onlooker passing the building regularly, they got the unusual site of the building disappearing from the ground up rather than the more conventional top-down approach.

So why did Keltbray choose such an unusual method? The answer lies in the roof structure, which is huge because it was used to suspend all the floors from above. The roof took up 3 floors worth of space and used post-tensioned concrete beams more commonly seen in bridges. By doing this, the designers maximised the interior space, but also posed a problem for anyone tasked with demolishing the building.

If you'd like to know in great deal how exactly the 20 Fenchurch Street building was demolished, then head on over to the great article at Building.co.uk, which takes you through the whole process.

Basildon residents upset over new asbestos waste transfer centre

The residents of Basildon are less than happy with news of a new waste transfer centre being setup by demolition company Keltbray. The new centre will deal with asbestos waste.

Anger stems from what looks to be a lack of information and consultation with local residents before green lighting such a facility on their doorstep. That anger seems to be directed at Essex County Council and not Keltbray.

Jeff Letch, waste manager for Keltbray is attempting to reassure people that the operation is safe and precautions and safe guards are in place to contain the asbestos on-site. He commented:

The risks involved with this are very minimal and we have stringent procedures in place to make sure local residents will never be affected by this new facility.

All asbestos entering the facility will be double-bagged and then moved into containers by hand. The facility is also secured by a 2m fence and CCTV monitoring 24 hours a day.

Both the Environment Agency and Basildon Local Council are happy with the facility being created.
