Our very own Mike Kehoe featured in The Times newspaper recently as part of the paper's Working Life interview series.

Demolition & Recycling International gave the following summary:

"The interview focused on Mike and his team’s response to an emergency in the south east of England last August, when a bridge over the M20 motorway was seriously damaged. It also covered a career spanning more than 30 years during which Mike has been responsible for demolishing 150 tower blocks."

Online access to The Times requires a subscription. However, the slides for the talk he gave at the recent World Demolition Summit are not. You can view and download them from the summit's website.

World Demolition Summit and Awards Approaches

The 2016 World Demolition Summit gets underway on Friday at the Marriott Biscayne Bay Hotel, Miami, USA.

A healthy attendance is expected for this year’s Summit, which is being held outside of Europe for the very first time and features speakers from Europe, North America, New Zealand, and Japan. This is followed by an evening awards dinner celebrating the best in demolition and recycling from a shortlist compiled of entrants from 15 different countries.

C&D Consultancy has a strong presence at the Summit. Demolition Consultant Mike Kehoe will be delivering a talk during the conference that explores the question ‘Can traditional demolition learn from explosive demolition?’

Industry veteran Kehoe joined C&D just over three years ago, running the Liverpool and London offices, and has quickly become recognised as an expert in inner city demolition. He follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who both worked in the demolition industry.

Furthermore, C&D has been shortlisted for two jobs in the Collaboration Award category of the World Demolition Awards.

The first nomination recognises the role C&D played alongside J Bryan Victoria, One Vision Housing and Technical Demolition Services in recovering the demolition of Seaforth Tower in Liverpool earlier this year, after initial explosives failed to bring down the two tower blocks.

The second is for C&D’s work alongside Dem-Master, Safedem, and Keltbray on the New Gorbals Housing Association’s demolition of the high rise flats at Glasgow’s Norfolk Court in May 2016.

“We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for the Collaboration Award again this year, having won it in 2015 for our collaboration with Safedem on Whitevale and Bluevale Towers in Glasgow. ” added C&D Lead Consultant, John Woodward.

“It is particularly pleasing that we have been nominated for two jobs. I believe that these collaborative networks have strengthened our reputation as a trouble-shooter and technical expert and contributed towards our growth.”

John concluded: “I am thrilled that our work has been recognised and we are all really looking forward to the awards ceremony. We wish all the other nominees all the best on the night.”

Keep an eye on our website over the next few days to see full details and results from the World Demolition Awards ceremony.

C&D collaborated with 777 Demolition on M20 bridge collapse

You couldn't fail to notice the bridge that collapsed across the M20 last month as it was plastered all over the news. The cause was simple to determine: a lorry had ploughed into it, having attempted to pass underneath at speed with a digger on the back that was too tall.

As the main route to the Channel Tunnel and the Port of Dover, keeping the M20 open is extremely important for Britain's transportation system and businesses. 777 Demolition was awarded the job of clearing the remains of the bridge, and they opted to use C&D's Mike Kehoe as the demolition engineer for the project. The bridge needed to be fully demolished and some 400 tonnes of rubble removed from the carriageway.

The collaboration worked well, with the collapsed pedestrian bridge being removed and the motorway reopened the following day. In fact, the whole job moved along at around 8 hours ahead of schedule.

For further details on the accident, visit the BBC News website.

Valentine's Day goes with a Bang for DSR Demolition

Early yesterday when most people were opening Valentine cards, the team at DSR Demolition were hard at work bringing down the Cow Green car park in Halifax.

The tricky job was close to an existing tower block, adjacent to a dual carriageway, and very close to a number of other properties, but came down without injury or damage to surrounding buildings.

Well done to the whole of the DSR team and to Mike Kehoe who was the C&D Consultancy demolition engineer for the project.

DSR Demolition has a great write-up about the implosion on their Facebook page.

C&D Consultancy’s Mike Kehoe to speak at rescheduled Turkish Demolition Conference.

We are delighted to announce that our very own Mike Kehoe has been chosen as one of the guest speakers at next year’s Demolition Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. The rescheduled event – which is organised jointly by D&Ri publisher KHL and its Turkish partner APA Publishing – will be held on Thursday March 12, 2015 at the famous Marriot Asia Hotel on the Asian banks of the Bosphorus.

The event, primarily intended for the developing Turkish demolition industry, will once again see a mix of presentations from relevant speakers from that country as well as from a number of leading figures in the global demolition industry.

“The Turkish demolition industry has really taken off in the past few years, thanks in no small part to the Turkish Demolition Association,” Mike Kehoe says. “The timing for this latest event is perfect as the Turkish ministry is currently drafting new regulations to monitor and control this growing industry, and they are keen to learn from the experience of other nations.”

Industry veteran Kehoe is a perfect guest speaker candidate. Having joined the C&D Consultancy team just over a year ago, he has quickly become the recognised expert in inner city demolition, carrying out extensive and ongoing works with the likes of Berkeley Homes across London. Furthermore, Kehoe is uniquely able to speak about the full gamut of the demolition process from pre-start documentation, through risk assessment, methodology and training to contract sign-off.

“There is no question that, in many aspects of demolition, the UK leads the way. We are the safest, most regulated demolition industry in the world; and that provides us with a unique perspective from which to educate and assist emerging markets,” Kehoe concludes. “I am looking forward to the visit to Istanbul and to sharing with the Turkish developments some of the key methodologies that have established the UK as the world leader in demolition.”

This year however we are delighted to announce that the C&D presentation will be delivered by Mike Kehoe who will give an overview of the planning required to deliver safe, on time demolition within an inner city environment.
