Imploding 8 steel cables on a huge dragline crane boom

When you think implosions, it's typically an explosive demolition involving a building, or even a bridge. But sometimes the implosion jobs are a little more specialized, as is the case in this instance.

Controlled Demolition Inc. were subcontracted for implosion duties by Southern Salvage Inc. of Florida to perform an explosive severance of steel cabling. These cables, 8 of them, were holding up the dragline boom on a fairly sizable crane. By breaking them, the boom could fall safely to the ground for a future salvage operation.

As you can see, the implosion went off without a hitch.

Unique, circular 19-storey St. Ann's Heritage Tower imploded

At the end of last month a rather unique building was imploded in Irondequoit, New York.

It was called the St. Ann's Heritage Tower and was 19 storey's high. 39 years ago it began life as an assisted living building with the occupants averaging 66 years in age. But that kept rising until the average was 88 and the nursing staff were all specialists in elderly care. Having to traverse 19 storeys didn't help with such an elderly set of "patients".

The implosion was carried out by Controlled Demolition Inc. A special approach was required due to the circular construction of the tower. The structure actually consisted of two parts: the central elevator shaft and the outer, reinforced concrete columns holding up the floors.

In total, 160 pounds of explosives were used to allow the building to fall mostly under gravity. The explosives were required to weaken it enough to do so.

Radio Network House imploded (video)

The video above is of the 14-storey Radio Network House building in Christchurch, which was damaged in the earthquake last year.

The implosion went better than expected with the structure rolling more to the north than was expected. The velocity of the collapse was also very slow at just 12 millimeters per second, with not damage occurring to the nearby buildings.

The work was carried out by Controlled Demolition Inc. using 60kg of explosives, at a total cost of $1 million. Apparently the implosion saved around $200,000 over the alternative methods that were suggested.

Pallas Hotel implosion video

On July 22nd Controlled Demolition Inc. carried out the implosion you see above of the Pallas Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The building was an 18-storey steel structure covering 500,000+ square feet. CDI were the subcontractors on the job along with the Loizeaux Group of Companies.

Two Mohave Generating Station Boilers imploded

The video above shows the implosion of two Mohave Generating Station Boilers located in Laughlin, Nevada. Each boiler weighed 12,000 tons, stood 220 feet tall, and was constructed using a steel frame.

The work was carried out by Controlled Demolition Inc on the 8th June acting as subcontractor for NCM Demolition & Remediation. As you can see, the job went without a hitch.

CDI implode a Load-Out Tower (video)

Controlled Demolition Inc. must have someone on-site exclusively looking after filming their implosions, as it seems every building demolished gets multiple angles recorded. Not that we're complaining as we love seeing these videos at Demolish and Dismantle.

Earlier this week we got to see a DAP Buliding imploded at a chemical plant in Bartow, Florida. The building was 100-feet tall and comprised mainly of steel. This latest video is on the same site, and shows a Load-Out Tower that measures 120-feet tall being imploded. Again, the structure was mainly comprised of steel and it looked to be a very clean blast.

Controlled Demolition implode 100-foot Chemical Plant DAP building

Following on from yesterday's Dick Green implosion, we have another explosive takedown video to share with you. This one is from Controlled Demolition, Inc. who acted as implosion subcontractor to Southern Salvage, Inc. of Fort Meade, Florida.

The job involved the demolition of a DAP Building, which formed part of a chemical plant located in Bartow, Florida. The structure was 100-feet tall and comprised mainly of steel. The implosion was carried out at 10am EST last Friday.

Two exhaust stacks implode using 40 pounds of dynamite

The video above starts off with a lot of talking about the project, but ends with the actual implosion from two angles.

The demolition is being carried out as part of a recovery program on the Savannah River Site. This job involved the removal of two 145-foot tall, 700 ton stacks previously used for over 50 years along with two P and R Reactors, both of which were decommissioned.

Here's how the stacks were prepared:

The base of each stack was modified to create "columns" into which they will drill 80 15-inch-deep horizontal holes for explosive loading. The explosive charge was initiated by nonelectric detonators ranging in time from 25-200 milliseconds to assist in controlling the rate and direction of the fall of each stack. Seismographs were used in the immediate area to monitor the vibration and air blast generated by the demolition.

A total of 40 pounds of dynamite was used in the implosion. All demolition work is being carried out by Controlled Demolition Inc.

New footage of Hanford 300 Area Building Implosions

A few days ago Demolition News had some footage of the Hanford 300 Area building implosions in Washington being carried out by Washington Closure Hanford, Clauss Construction of California, and Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI).

Now some new video of the implosions has been released by Washington Hanford and we've included both the main video and B-roll here. We especially like the slow-motion version in the second half of the video above.
