Don't undermine the structure!

John has spent the last two days training members of Berkeley Group in Demolition & Asbestos Awareness from the client perspective.

During the course he has said, on more than one occasion, never undermine the structure when using a High Reach machine. So imagine his surprise when he got to his hotel to find that Rob Kulinski, a Twitter user known as @RobtheWrecker, had sent this piece of footage that perfectly sums up why you should never undermine the structure.

Water tower at RAF St Athan demolition

Dick Green has just completed his latest explosive demolition, this time at RAF St Athan in South Wales. The building was an old water tower and involved both IndEx and SES.

The tower was in a tight location with buildings on all 4 sides in close proximity. 2 side buildings were less than 10m away, and a pump and tank were 8m to the rear. Closest of all was a cast water main just 1m from the front of the building.

In order to get a vertical collapse they used 10kg of explosives placed in 250 holes. The end result was a perfect takedown with no damage caused to the surrounding structures.

Chicago public housing demolition video

The video above is the start of an 8 week demolition on the Cabrini-Green public housing building in North Burling Street, Chicago.

The building has been empty since December and is located in a very rundown area of the city. The local government is set to redevelop the area with affordable housing for local residents. Further demolition could occur if the many low-rise units in the area are also replaced, but locals are fighting to keep them.

Here's another block of flats taken down in the area last month:

There's also a 24/7 live video feed of this final building demolition available to watch. It's on U.S. time so the work won't be visible until late in the UK day.

Miniature Skyscraper Demolition

Demolition News has tracked down a great video detailing how all the demolition you see on TV and in movies isn't actually real. While a lot may be done on computers, models are still required to get some of the detail across to the viewer, or just so animators can see what goes on during a building demolition.

It's a fascinating watch:
