Collins Demolition Takes Delivery of Volvo High Reach

We were very happy to hear that Collins Demolition has taken delivery of a Volvo EC380E HR high reach machine complete with a brand new Rotar RSS20 scrap shear.

The EC380E has an operating weight of 113,410 pounds, a gross power of 303HP, tool weight of 6,600 pounds, and a reach of 23 meters (75 feet). By taking delivery of the machine, it means Collins no longer needs to rely on hiring a high reach machine when they need one, which will save money in the long run. They also have an existing fleet of Volvo machines together with a range of grabs, shears, and pulverisers.

According to Scott Craddock, director at Collins Demolition:

"Owning our own high reach strengthens our demolition offering and will help us to cut costs associated with hiring one in ... It is a welcome addition to our expanding range of equipment and we are looking forward to the next one ... We have also added to our range of Rotar attachments with the new scrap shear. We feel that the Rotar range is perfectly matched to our Volvo fleet."

DSM Demolition presentation date change

There has been a date change for a talk being given by Robert Powell of DSM Demolition. The presentation focuses on BS6187:2011 including high reach demolition and demolition by designed collapse mechanisms, including explosives. It will now take place on the 12th June.

Coleman and Company near the end of Shawholme Crescent, Glasgow demolition

Coleman & Company of Shady Lane, Great Barr, Birmingham have continued with the demolition of Shawholme Crescent, Glasgow and are now nearing the end of the main demolition works.

C&D were appointed as CDM-C on the project to continue our working relationship with both Coleman and their client Glasgow Housing Association.

The contract saw Coleman & Company demolish the towers by use of high reach machines to complete the works.

The photo shows the final section of the second of the two blocks. Once demolition is completed at the end of August Coleman will remain on site to process the hardcore and remove the foundations from the blocks.

Footage of the Cat DEM70 high reach appears

As discovered by Demolitionnews, the video above is the first footage we've seen of the Cat DEM70 high reach hard at work in Oslo, Norway.

It's the biggest of four new high reach machines created as part of the collaboration between Caterpillar and Demlone. As you can see, it has a watering system built into the shear to help keep dust levels down at the point where it is being created.

NFDC introduces a 3-day High Reach Training Course

The High Reach is a machine that has become so popular in recent years, you may be surprised not to find one on some demolition sites. The problem is, they can also be very dangerous if not used correctly.

With that in mind, the NFDC introduced the High Reach Guidance Notes document 5 years ago. But that's no longer enough, and a 3-day training course has officially be unveiled.

Here's the explanation of the course direct from the NFDC:

"Open to demolition plant operatives holding an A65B CPCS card for excavators with a working height up to 15 metres, the new three-day course is designed to introduce candidates to additional health, safety and legislation required when operating a demolition-adapted high reach excavator at working heights of up to 30 metres. The course indentifies methodology and additional structural awareness required when dismantling differing structures.

The course also covers specific machine controls and maintenance requirements based on an array of manufacturers’ operating manuals. Candidates will also visit a manufacturers’ premises where they will have the opportunity to operate the machine in a controlled environment."

The course starts on April 3rd, 2012 and will be limited to 8 candidates. After that, the course will be repeated regularly in the months that follow, so you and your staff should be able to secure places.

One final job for UK's largest high reach excavator

Block No. 1 in Bolton Court has recently garnered the attention of the UK's largest high reach excavator. Coleman and Company have been using it to demolish the block of flats in what could be its last job before heading to New Zealand.

Coleman & Co have sold the 65-metre high machine to Nikau Contractors, and after its long journey halfway around the world will help demolish parts of Christchurch ready for the rebuild.

Don't undermine the structure!

John has spent the last two days training members of Berkeley Group in Demolition & Asbestos Awareness from the client perspective.

During the course he has said, on more than one occasion, never undermine the structure when using a High Reach machine. So imagine his surprise when he got to his hotel to find that Rob Kulinski, a Twitter user known as @RobtheWrecker, had sent this piece of footage that perfectly sums up why you should never undermine the structure.

C&D increase assessment capability

C&D are pleased to announce that we are now able to offer all heights high reach demolition machine assessments as a service to all existing and new clients.

Fatal Accident involving world's highest reach demolition machine

We are sorry to report that the Ruschh 90 metre high reach demolition machine, as featured on this site and Demolition News on many occasions over the last 18 months has been involved in a fatal accident yesterday in Holland.

We have no further details at the moment but we know that Demolition News have spoken to a number of sources and have a full report so click the link and read more details.

Our thoughts at this time go out to the family of the deceased and to the families of all involved in this awful tragedy.

Armac call time on former well known Coventry pub

Whilst most of England spent Saturday preparing for our football team to demolish the USA in the World Cup (and we all know what happened there!) Armac spent Saturday demolishing a famous Coventry pub The Greyhound to make way for the new Severn Trent offices.

The tight site surrounded by listed buildings and the new offices meant that Armac had to bring to site one of their high reach machines that, owing to it’s size turns slower than Emile Heskey, and had to sit it farther away from the building than normal to carry out the works.

An early start, a good driver and great team work saw the pub quickly reduced to rubble that was then crushed on site and used to backfill the cellar.

The photograph shows the large grab attachment in use that would have really helped Robert Green on Saturday night to hold onto the shot from Clint Dempsey!

New High Reach Demolition Machine guide available

The National Demolition Association and the NFDC have teamed up to produce a 14-page booklet entitled "High Reach Demolition Machine Guidance Document."

The booklet is described as follows:

"The full-color, 14-page booklet was written to promote important discourse regarding the specification of work practices, the manufacture, supply, and use of the machines, and their transportation, loading, and unloading. The document was designed to be used as an aid in developing a work plan and engineering survey.

Audiences for the document include manufacturers, distributors, transporters, erection crews, and operators. The guide was prepared by an NDA Work Group studying equipment safety, working under the direction of NDA President Raymond Passeno, CIH, CHMM."
