HSE offers Asbestos guidance publication

The Health and Safety Executive is offering a publication covering the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP), and guidance for anyone who will be working around asbestos.

These are the latest regulations, and the document provides all the information you need to understand what your legal duties are, what you need to do to comply with requirements, and offer minimum standards to keep employees safe.

The 116 pages of guidance is available as a free download or for £15 in printed form. You can pick it up in either form directly from the HSE on their website.

CITB training grants deadline fast approaches

The time you have left to put in a claim for the 2012/2013 Grants Scheme can now be counted in days. The closing date is Thursday, October 31st.

Louise Calam of the NFDC sent through the following guidance:

"All eligible employers who are registered with CITB will have until Thursday, October 31st to put in their claims for training carried out or for the achievement of approved qualifications between August 1st 2012 to July 31st 2013. In addition to the existing grant available, those that have made and had a grant claim accepted during the 2012/2013 Grants Scheme year will be eligible for the Exceptional Training Grant (ETG) – a scheme launched earlier this year to incentivise training.

The ETG, a £30m incentivisation scheme agreed by CITB’s Training Committee, will be based on a percentage of all grants claimed by employers and will be paid automatically to eligible claimants (normal Grants Scheme rules apply) in December 2013. The ETG will also apply to training taken in the 2013/2014 Grants Scheme year and will be paid December 2014."

KHL release video of the C&D presentation at the 2012 World Demolition Summit

John was doing another presentation about the job at the German Demolition Association Conference in Berlin this week, but that, of course, has been cancelled owing to the death of his father.

Diana Stil to speak at the World Demolition Summit

Our own John Woodward has already been confirmed as a speaker at this year's World Demolition Summit, and he's going to be in good company. Diana Stil, co-founder and co-director of New Zealand's Nikau, will be joining him on stage.

Diane is the current president of the New Zealand Demolition and Asbestos Association (NZDAA), advises the New Zealand Contracting ITO, and reviewed the Demolition Code of Practice with regards to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Her talk is sure to be both interesting and eye-opening as it will focus on the demolition industry in New Zealand following the Christchurch earthquake, which devastated the area and left many a building in need of demolition.

The date and venue were announced back in January, and today is the last dau for entries. We are of course talking about the World Demolition Summit 2012 and the Awards that run alongside it.

World Demolition Awards gets new judge

The World Demolition Awards are presented alongside the Demolition Summit 2012 held in Amsterdam this coming November. Our own John Woodward, IDE President is once again on the panel of judges for the awards, but this year he is joined by a new judge.

Patrick Frye, pictured above, will also have a hand in picking the winners. He has been in the demolition industry since 1986 and currently focuses on challenging demolition contracts where a novel technical solution is required.

We hope being a judge doesn't pose as much of a challenge as one of his demolition projects, but if the competition is as high as previous years it's going to be tough to pick the winners.

John Woodward confirmed as World Demolition Awards judge

The IDE Spring Seminar is happening on Friday, February 24th at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. The proceedings will be opened by our own John Woodward with a Welcome Address followed by a number of papers and reports being presented.

Register for the International Safety Awards 2012

The International Safety Awards is now accepting applications for the 2012 scheme. They are open to members and non-members, and relate to the health and safety management at a particular site or business unit during the previous calendar year.

According to the British Safety Council there are many benefits for applicants and of course the winners. These include:

• External endorsement
• Performance benchmark
• Heightened prestige
• Press coverage
• Winners' banquet
• Winners' logo
• Winners' trophy and certificate

Registering to take part involves answering 12 questions relating to your health and safety management. These need to be completed and returned by the 29th February. The results are issued on the 22nd March.

Another major training order for C&D

C&D customer Berkeley Homes have appointed C&D to carry out their Demolition Awareness for Managers training programme for 2012.

Following successful delivery of training courses for a number of their site managers in 2011 Berkeley Homes have today re-appointed C&D Consultancy as their training providers for an identical course running throughout 2012.

NFDC introduces a 3-day High Reach Training Course

The High Reach is a machine that has become so popular in recent years, you may be surprised not to find one on some demolition sites. The problem is, they can also be very dangerous if not used correctly.

With that in mind, the NFDC introduced the High Reach Guidance Notes document 5 years ago. But that's no longer enough, and a 3-day training course has officially be unveiled.

Here's the explanation of the course direct from the NFDC:

"Open to demolition plant operatives holding an A65B CPCS card for excavators with a working height up to 15 metres, the new three-day course is designed to introduce candidates to additional health, safety and legislation required when operating a demolition-adapted high reach excavator at working heights of up to 30 metres. The course indentifies methodology and additional structural awareness required when dismantling differing structures.

The course also covers specific machine controls and maintenance requirements based on an array of manufacturers’ operating manuals. Candidates will also visit a manufacturers’ premises where they will have the opportunity to operate the machine in a controlled environment."

The course starts on April 3rd, 2012 and will be limited to 8 candidates. After that, the course will be repeated regularly in the months that follow, so you and your staff should be able to secure places.

Post 2012 could be a boom time for demolition

Come 2012 there is an important sporting event happening in London, but unless the UK government has some major plans laid out for the new facilities being built now once the Olympic Games are over, we could see a lot of demolition taking place.

The reason we say that is because of what is currently happening in Portugal.

Football fans will remember Euro 2004 was held in Portugal and a number of stadiums were built or upgraded to support the tournament at a cost of 600 million euros. Six years on though, and the Portugese government is considering demolishing some of those stadiums. The reason? One of maintenance costs for stadiums that are used a lot less than say shopping malls or business centres in their place.



Apparently just looking after a stadium costs an absolute fortune with Portugese cities such as Leiro wanting to cut those costs by 1.2 million Euros, not a year, but a month!

With the UK in a lot of debt at the moment, and major investment going into preparing for the 2012 Games, lets hope the facilities not only remain used, but also profitable come 2013 and beyond.
