World Demolition Summit in Miami now open for registration

Registration is now open for the eighth World Demolition Summit, which takes place this year in Miami, Florida on the 14th October - its first time in the USA. The Summit, always previously held in Europe, is established as one of the major annual international events for the demolition industry.

The event, which is organised by Demolition & Recycling International (D&Ri) magazine in cooperation with the National Demolition Association (NDA), will again feature a one-day conference followed by the World Demolition Awards dinner in the evening.

Conference speakers already confirmed include:
  • Mike Casbon (Technical Director, ERM, USA)
  • Dr Jan Kupec (Technical Director, Ground Engineering/Infrastructure, Aurecon Group, New Zealand)
  • Roberto Folchi (Mining Engineer/Geologist, Nitrex SRL - Explosives Engineering, Italy)
  • Ahmed Amir Khalil (VP, International Business Development, Applied Science International, USA)
  • Mark Lies (Partner, Seyfarth Shaw, USA)
Dr Kupec will report on his experience of earthquake affected areas and other sites in New Zealand; Ahmed Amir Khalil and Roberto Folchi will look at simulation technology on a bridge demolition in Italy; and Mike Casbon of ERM will highlight the need for attention to detail in demolition projects.

More information about the World Demolition Summit is available in the Demolition & Recycling International magazine and on the conference website at www.khl.com/wds, which will include regular updates.

Registration can be done over on the Demolition Summit website, with the cost of the conference and dinner coming in at £500.

Amway Arena implosion (video)

Last week we spoke of a big implosion happening over the weekend in Orlando, Florida. The building was the Amway Arena, otherwise known as the 18,000 seat Orlando Arena and TD Waterhouse Centre.

The implosion went ahead and can be seen in the video above. It looks like the job went without a hitch and the four pillars were left standing as expected.

Stadium blowdown happening March 25th in Orlando

This coming Sunday there's set to be a large implosion taking place in Orlando, Florida. The building is the Amway Arena, also known as the Orlando Arena and TD Waterhouse Centre.

It has been closed since September, 2010, and demolition started in December last year. However, the outer structure is being taken down with explosives after everything that could be recycled from the interior has been removed.

The O-Rena is no small structure, and regularly seated 15-18,000 people for sporting events including basketball, football, ice hockey, and concerts. Now it will be removed to make way for a new "urban development."

The level of dust the implosion will create is high, but things are helped by the fact the arena is surrounded by large car parks. Even so, nearby residence are being asked to keep all windows closed for a couple of hours from 7am this Sunday. Unusually, the blowdown will take down the structure, but leaves the four corner pillars standing. The reason for this is unclear.

For most of us the blowdown will mean one thing: lots of implosion footage to watch early next week. If it gets uploaded to the Internet, we'll be sure to feature it on the site.

CDI implode a Load-Out Tower (video)

Controlled Demolition Inc. must have someone on-site exclusively looking after filming their implosions, as it seems every building demolished gets multiple angles recorded. Not that we're complaining as we love seeing these videos at Demolish and Dismantle.

Earlier this week we got to see a DAP Buliding imploded at a chemical plant in Bartow, Florida. The building was 100-feet tall and comprised mainly of steel. This latest video is on the same site, and shows a Load-Out Tower that measures 120-feet tall being imploded. Again, the structure was mainly comprised of steel and it looked to be a very clean blast.

Controlled Demolition implode 100-foot Chemical Plant DAP building

Following on from yesterday's Dick Green implosion, we have another explosive takedown video to share with you. This one is from Controlled Demolition, Inc. who acted as implosion subcontractor to Southern Salvage, Inc. of Fort Meade, Florida.

The job involved the demolition of a DAP Building, which formed part of a chemical plant located in Bartow, Florida. The structure was 100-feet tall and comprised mainly of steel. The implosion was carried out at 10am EST last Friday.

We wrote about the third largest building implosion carried out by AED in February. The building in question was the 1515 Tower in West Palm Beach, Florida.

We've been sent some new images of the implosion by AED and the BiggerBlast website. They are included below. Click each image to see a larger version.

Third largest building implosion by AED a success

Demolition News posted this great video of the 1515 tower in West Palm Beach, Florida implosion.

There's also this bystanders video of the same event. A little less professionally shot, but gives you the view most people would have had of the implosion:

With this job AED achieved the world's third largest building implosion. It wasn't without incident, however. Residents reported a few cases of broken windows, and some building damage was caused. Most local building and gardens just experienced dust and light rubble scatter.
