ICM launches new website

The Institute of Construction Management (ICM) has this week relaunched its website with a brand new, up-to-date design.

The revamped site looks to be suitable for browsing regardless of which device you choose to view it on, be that a PC monitor, laptop display, tablet, or your smartphone. Course details, training requirements, membership details, and even a blog now feature.

If you have a few minutes to spare go visit the new website, and if you spot any problems let them know through their new contact page.

Terry Quarmby to speak at Institute of Construction Management CPD meeting

Former IDE President Dr Terry Quarmby is set to speak at Institute of Construction Management CPD meeting.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday March 22nd at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. Terry's talk is entitled "Dismantling and Demolition – an update on best practice."

The schedule is as follows:

ICM announces date for Southern Region Dinner

The Institute of Construction Management has announced that the Southern Region's 55th Annual Dinner and Dance will be held at The Holiday Inn Solent (Titchfield) on March 5th, starting at 7pm.

Eric Richards, Social Secretary, shared the following invitation with us:

John Woodward named ICM’s Construction Manager of the Year

Our very own John Woodward has every right to celebrate in the run up to Christmas as he's become the first demolition expert to be named the Institute of Construction Management’s Construction Manager of the Year.

John beat more than 50 other professionals to take the title. His ongoing efforts to educate the young, promoting demolition as a great career, and his work in general spanning from London all the way up to Glasgow were reasons why he came out on top.

Speaking about the award, John said:

"This came as a bit of a shock to me if I’m being honest, but I’m delighted that my industry, which often gets overlooked, has been recognised for the work we do in clearing the way for the future. It has been a massive year for the business and one that has seen a number of the projects we’ve been consulting on hit the national headlines.

I’m keen to use this ICM Award to do even more Primary Future talks to promote and push our sector, showing the future generation of workers that demolition offers great career opportunities both at home and abroad."

ICM 40th anniversary speaker line-up announced

This October the Institute of Construction Management is going to celebrate their 40th anniversary with a National Conference on Friday, October 16th.

We now have the provisional speaker line-up for the conference, and it includes our very own John Woodward:

More speakers are set to be confirmed closer to the day.

If you would like to attend, it costs £20 for ICM Members and £65 for non-members. There's also a coach trip planned for the following Saturday. For £10 you can spend 11am - 5pm visiting Bibury, Bourton on the Water and Stow. Then in the evening there is a dinner, dance, and toasts including a raffle before the day ends at midnight. The evening meal costs £40.

Institute of Construction Management celebrates 40 Years of Building Excellence

John Woodward accepted onto the CDM Register of the Institute of Construction Management

We are pleased to announce that John has been accepted onto the above register as "Suitably Qualified to be admitted to the ICM CDM Register at Level 4 with a Specialism in Demolition"

This acceptance coupled with John's RMaPS qualification demonstrates competency under CDM 2007 Appendix 4.

ICM President Les Helliwell has been a busy man

Institute of Construction Management President Les Helliwell has been a busy man presenting Fellowship scrolls and the Manager of the Year Award. Here's what he has to say about his recent activity.

As National President of our Institute, one of the highlights of my tenure is to present awards to deserving members and this year has been quite momentous for me personally, First, I had tremendous pleasure in presenting the Manager of the year award for 2012/2013 to Clifton Brown FIConstM who, whilst carrying out sterling work on our Executive committee as Director of Education has also fulfilled his role as a Construction Manager with a Nationwide Company handling to completion, within some onerous time frames, projects in the Southern Region to a the highest standards required from his employers clients. He recently took on further challenges with a new company which requires even more of his undoubted talents and organization skills so congratulations Cliff.

My next presentation was the Institute Fellowship to Carl Holden who became a member in 1978 and has been in our Industry from the tender age of 15 until retirement. He is a time served Joiner, advancing to site foreman, site manager and site agent until joining the Department of Environment as a technical officer. Carl has supported the Institute at local level for many years and is still active on the Northern committee and at all CPD lectures. Many thanks for all the good work.


Having tried to get Carl together with my third presentation eventually proved successful and I was able to present Peter Jones with his Fellowship award at a local CPD night with Tata Steel. Peter or ‘Percy’ as he has always been known to us due to too many Peter Jones’ when first employed is also a time served joiner with various mantles as foreman, general foreman and manager during his working life depending on what was required in the site structures. He worked for many years for a company called M.Harrisons in Leeds, This company served as a breeding ground for ICM members who were drafted in by some of our now deceased predecessors and we have had many a laugh whilst remembering some of the ‘good old days’ as we still retain a half dozen or so members from the 70s in the Northern and Scottish Region.

It gave me great pleasure to present Peter (Percy) Jones with a Fellowship award following long service to the Institute, Percy joined the Institute as a Foreman Joiner in the 70s along with many others who worked at Harrison and Co in Leeds, Harrisons was a source of many of our member's at the time and we all have many a laugh after meetings when recalling some great times back in the day when building was in its ascendency.

As in the above picture I was also pleased to present Carl Holden with his Fellowship award whilst attending a visit to the Sheffield Based acclaimed company Kingkraft who, whilst demonstrating some of their innovate assisted bathing equipment, were kind enough to provide refreshments for this award. Carl also joined our Institute in The 70s and went through time served apprenticeship and management ranks to become a Technical Officer with the Dept. Of Environment.

IConstM President Les Helliwell presents a Fellowship scroll to Carl Holden

On Friday, May 24th Carl Holden was presented with the ICM Fellowship Award from the Institute of Construction Management during a visit to the Kingkraft factory and Showroom. Carl is a retired Clerk Of Works who has supported our region and been a member since 1975, and we'd like to congratulate him on his award.

Institute of Construction Management launch National Register of Safety Competence

Les Helliwell, President and a Fellow of the Institute of Construction Management, is pleased to announce the launch of the National Register of Safety Competence.

Helliwell says "The register is open to new and existing institute members with entry dependent upon their competence, qualifications and experience attainments as measured against the CDM Regulations and the National Occupational Standards. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is pleased to see the register".

Helliwell added; "It is extremely important to eradicate all accidents and improve health and welfare issues in the construction industry, to ensure all personnel arrive home to their families safely each night.

The register is available to the public to enable verification of the competence of practitioners that customers, employers and authorities may be considering to engage and provides a level of assurance required by law.

Having the knowledge to operate safely within construction activities is vital to our goal and those engaging personnel, including domestic and non-domestic clients, designers, principal contractors, self-employed and workers.

We are aware that changes are being discussed with regard to the CDM Regulations that are due for review in 2014/15 and we believe that this will involve the principal contractors having greater input as CDM Co-ordinators in the future.

I commend the Institute of Construction Management and recommend the National Register of Safety Competence to all construction personnel. Membership and register applications can be found on our website at www.the-icm.com"

It goes without saying that John Woodward has applied for inclusion on the register.

The Institute of Construction Management April 16th regional meeting

The next ICM regional meeting will be held on Tuesday April 16th at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath with refreshment available from 6pm.

The topic for the meeting will be:

"Building Regulations Update"

The presentation provides an update on the changes to Part L, M, N, K, and P of the Building Regulations that come into effect in April 2013 as well as reviewing the recent history of the Building Regulations. Mark Hillier, of JM Partnership - Approved Inspectors, will also be discussing procedural changes to both the Local Authority and Approved Inspectors which affect the way they work.

There will also be an opportunity in the Open Forum to learn how the HSE Fees for Intervention [FFI] are impacting on the industry and how HSE Inspectors are looking beyond the Contractor when visiting construction sites and attempting to draw in clients, designers and CDM Coordinators into the process.

The meeting qualifies for CPD - CPD Certificates will be issued at the meeting to all those attending.

This is a free meeting but you do need to complete and return the Booking Form if you wish to attend.

Construction Manager of the Year: Ken Watts FIConstM

Each year the Institute of Construction Management elect a Construction Manager of the Year and it was fititng in Olympics year that Ken Watts FIConstM won the award following his excellent work in delivering the Olympic transport plan.

As the ICM explains:

"Ken left Gardener & Theobald, not for retirement but to join the Olympic Delivery Authority as Programme Manager within the Transport set-up team, preparing the transport network for the influx of over 70,000 athletes, officials, and media and over 8 million spectators.

Ken’s role was to develop an overall programme to ensure all aspects of all the various works streams detailed in the Olympic Transport Plan were captured and linked logically in one programme. The ODA programme captured over 4,000 separate activities and 600 milestones. From the milestones he had developed several High level Key Project Milestones charts which were monitored monthly and reported to Senior management and Government agencies and other delivery partners so they could be assured that the Games Transport would be available as planned. As we have seen it was a great success and much of the £6.5 billion investment in transport infrastructure has a lasting legacy."

The Institute of Construction Management next meeting

The next regional meeting for The Institute of Construction Management will be held on Tuesday November 27th at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath with refreshment available from 6pm.

The presentation will be “Ken Watts & the ODA – The Review” and covers the work undertaken by Ken Watts delivering the transport infrastructure for the Olympic Delivery Authority: Ken will talk through his 6 years working for the Transport Directorate and provide:

- A review of the planning that went into the Olympics
- A post-operative review of how the transport planning worked in practice
- What legacy does this provide us with in terms of transport infrastructure

The meeting qualifies for CPD – CPD Certificates will be issued at the meeting to all those attending. This is a free meeting but you do need to complete and return the Booking Form if you wish to attend.

The Institute of Construction Management next meeting

The next regional meeting for the Institute of Construction Management will be held on Tuesday October 23rd at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath with refreshment available from 6pm.

The focus of the meeting will be "The Appointed Person – Lifting Operations."

All lifting operations come under the provisions of LOLER [The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations] which require that all lifting operations have a ‘lifting plan’ and an ‘Appointed Person’

Although these issues may have been neglected in the past on some construction sites the introduction of the HSE’s Fees for Intervention [FFI] charging regime on October 1st is likely to see renewed interest from HSE Construction Inspectors in checking the paperwork for lifting operations on all construction sites where they undertake planned or reactive visits.

Contracts Managers and Site Managers need to ensure that proper procedures and documentation are in place before they receive a visit.

Clients and CDM Coordinators need to ensure that these issues are properly addressed in the Construction Phase Plan before giving approval for construction works to commence on site.

LOLER covers a wide range of operations including the use of mobile cranes and lorry mounted lifting equipment and applies across the construction industry wherever materials and components are moved or lifted into position on site.

The meeting qualifies for CPD – CPD Certificates will be issued at the meeting to all those attending.
