Terry Quarmby to speak at Institute of Construction Management CPD meeting

Former IDE President Dr Terry Quarmby is set to speak at Institute of Construction Management CPD meeting.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday March 22nd at the St. Francis Social Club at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. Terry's talk is entitled "Dismantling and Demolition – an update on best practice."

The schedule is as follows:

18.45 - Welcome and Introduction – Dean Lundin- Chairman
19.00 - Speaker – Terry Quarmby

First IDE Exam Prep Day in Scotland

Following many requests for membership from North of the Border, IDE ran the first Exam Prep Day there on Friday, 30th August in Leith.

The day, and the regional meeting that followed, was kindly sponsored by Forth Demolition Limited and was held at the Holiday Inn Express in Leith which is a stone's throw from the home of the Royal Yacht Britannia.

The Prep day, hosted by Dr.Terry Quarmby and John Woodward, saw exam candidates taken through exam techniques and examples of what may be asked in the Institute exams next month. All of the candidates stated that the day was a success and was an obvious help in the exam process.

Following a full day of training the early evening saw the regional event well supported as usual at the same venue. There were presentations from Jim Skilling, former head of the HSE Asbestos Licensing Group, who gave an overview of H&S issues from his time as an HSE inspector. Dr. Terry Quarmby gave a short talk on "Designing for Demolition" and a proposed an end of life building directive. NFDC CEO Howard Button updated everyone on DRIDS including a live demonstration of the website and the iPhone App.

Stephen McCann of Forth Demolition opened and closed the meeting and he will be producing a full report on proceedings in the next few days so please revisit this site next week for Stephen's report.

IDE Scottish regional meeting is fast approaching

The next IDE Scottish Regional meeting will take place on Friday evening August 30th at the Holiday Inn Express, Britannia Way, Ocean Drive, Leith, EH6 6JJ and will follow on from the IDE Scottish exam prep day at the same venue earlier that day.

The speakers include NFDC CEO Howard Button on the new DRIDS and former HSE Edinburgh chief Jim Skilling, IDE Past President John Woodward and demolition industry legend Dr. Terry Quarmby

The meeting and the prep day have been sponsored by Forth Demolition Limited and is open to non-IDE members also.

IDE announce inaugural Scottish exam preparation day

Following many requests form enrolled IDE members north of the border the IDE will, for the first time, hold an exam preparation day in Scotland on Friday, 30th August 2013. The day organised and sponsored by Forth Demolition Limited will see Dr Terry Quarmby and John Woodward give tips and guidance to exam candidates prior to their sitting the institute exams in September.

The prep day will be followed by a regional meeting in the evening which will allow all those that attend both events to accumulate 9 hours of core IDE CPD. Full details of the event are on the booking form that can be found by emailing Maureen@demolitionengineers.net

Terry Quarmby awarded a PhD, becomes Dr Demolition

Former IDE President Terry Quarmby has been awarded a PhD with an 800,000 word thesis being the final piece of work to garner him the title of Dr. Demolition, at least among those who know him.

As for what his thesis covered, Demolitionnews has a decent summary:

"Quarmby highlights the correlation between the increase in recycling and an increase in on-site accidents; charts the rise of accidents since the beginning of the global recession; and postulates that – in the future – the industry might have to choose between safety and sustainability."

IDE publish new guide to the examination marking strategy

Following requests from members, the IDE have published a new downloadable guide to the examination marking strategy used for the Institute examinations. The guide, produced by Immediate Past President Terry Quarmby has been published to make it clear to candidates how their papers will be marked by the examiners and will ensure that whoever marks the papers will mark to a consistent benchmark.

This guide will assist candidates to clearly understand what is required from them during the examination and how they should deal with setting out their answers to ensure that they are able to maximise their scoring, and it will help to increase the pass rate.

IDE Marking Strategy

Former IDE President Terry Quarmby to speak to Institute of Construction Management

A number of members of the Institute of Demolition Engineers are also members of the Institute of Construction Management. To continue with closer collaboration between the two institutes Terry Quarmby has agreed to give a talk on “Demolition- Methods, Tools, Processes” to the South East Region of the IConstM on Tuesday 12th July 2011 at Haywards Heath.

The talk starts at 18.00 and is free to attend for all IConstM and IDE members and will allow you to obtain 2 CPD hours.

John Woodward becomes IDE President

C&D Consultancy are delighted to announce that John Woodward was elected to the position of President of The Institute of Demolition Engineers on Friday 19th November at the IDE AGM at the Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden.

John succeeded Terry Quarmby, (Director of Dorton Group) and will hold the post for two years before being himself succeeded by Steve Jack of Erith Group.

IDE Midlands Region Meeting is a great success

The IDE Midlands meeting on Tuesday evening hosted by Coleman & Co at their Birmingham New Street Station site was a great success with 20 IDE members attending the site walk round and presentation.

Coleman & Co showcased innovative ideas to remove large concrete beams from the station car park to form space for the construction of the new atrium, by the use of purpose built overhead cranes and temporary propping systems throughout.

The meeting programme saw a presentation by the Coleman team and a site visit before a lively discussion session over refreshments that continued into the night at a local bar.

IDE Vice President John Woodward would like to thank Coleman & Co, on behalf of IDE President Terry Quarmby, for hosting the event and allowing the members to gain an insight into how such a difficult contract has been so well managed.

Inaugural Dublin event hailed as great success

IDE President Terry Quarmby and Vice President John Woodward, attended the first IDE meeting in Dublin on Thursday 11th February to bring the message of IDE membership to 32 delegates from all over Ireland.

The excellent day, sponsored by Sandvik and PP O’Connor, included interesting presentations from Terry, John, Sandvik, Volvo and Peninsular, for whom Margaret Pears gave her usual entertaining talk about the redundancy legislation minefield. The presentations provoked lively discussion and questions from the floor throughout the day.

It was nice to see long time IDE members Susi Buchner, Eamonn McCormack and Austin O’Hare in the audience and mixing with the delegates to encourage them to apply for membership and equally nice to receive requests for a repeat visit in Autumn 2010 or Spring 2011.

IDE try to foster closer relationship with Institute of Construction Management

IDE President Terry Quarmby and Vice President John Woodward, attended the 50th Anniversary Ball of the Institute of Construction Management in Southsea on Saturday 6th February to try to foster a better relationship between the two institutes.

Terry and John, who are both members of IConstM, met with the National Vice President, Regional President and Vice President and a number of Past Presidents of IConstM to discuss how the two institutes could grow closer together with the staging of joint regional meetings, encourage IConstM members to attend IDE events (particularly seminars) and encourage IDE members to apply for membership of IConstM.

The meeting went well with the agreement that the IDE will notify IConstM of all planned events and IConstM will do the same. Terry and John agreed to attend regional IConstM events in their respective regions and will review the relationship in 6 months and gauge its success.
