IDE President shares a seasonal greeting

IDE President David Darsey has written a seasonal greeting we thought was worth sharing:

With 2016 drawing to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the members, for your continued support of the Institute over the last twelve months.

We have seen many new members join us this year and attendance at all IDE events, Seminars, Regional Meetings, Annual Luncheon - to name but a few - have exceeded all of our expectations. The IDE 40th Anniversary celebrations in July at the Science Museum was an amazing success and the feedback extremely positive during the whole evening.

The IDE continues to grow from strength to strength and exciting times are ahead for the us in 2017, especially with the introduction of the new Demolition Degree that will be the first of its kind for the industry.

Personally I am looking forward to the next two years as your President and would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Very Prosperous New Year.

Is a "no cards Christmas" the way to go?

This year, as in the previous 10 years, C&D Consultancy will not be sending Christmas cards to customers and friends to wish them seasonal greetings, instead we will be making a charity donation equivalent to the cost of the cards and stamps to our charity of the year.

This year that donation has been made to Bark Inn Kennels after the kennel walk on Sunday.

I know many people love a house full of cards at this time of year, but we feel that the money we would have spent, this year £100, can be more useful to a charity hence our decision.

As more and more people use social media to send Christmas messages and share videos of themselves as dancing elves, perhaps you could do the same this year or next and help a charity close to your heart instead.

We gave it our best shot but it was not enough to win!

The World Demolition Awards for 2016 were decided on Friday in Miami and this year there was no trophy for C&D.

We were delighted to have been shortlisted for two contracts in the "Collaboration" category as we feel that just making the shortlist as one of the best in the world is a great honour. To win the award is a bonus.

This year the Winners of Collaboration were : Kiewit/Manson, the California Department of Transportation, COWI, ESA and Ventura Consulting for a major foundation removal on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge East Span.

The judges said: “A demanding project, including underwater demolition with the use of bubbles to absorb shock. Another brilliant project.”

170 representatives attended the NFDC Convention 2016

The NFDC Annual Convention took place at the end of August, running from the 26th-28th. It was a huge success and we've included the NFDC write-up below:


More than 170 representatives from 50 member companies of the NFDC came together this weekend (26-28 August) to enjoy the networking, social and business opportunities of the NFDC Annual Convention.

Held this year at the Hotel Villa Padierna Palace in Marbella and sponsored by Finning CAT, the convention included the annual half yearly business meeting. This saw Finning CAT give members a sneak preview into new demolition specific products it will be launching in October and January that will include new safety specific features unique to Caterpillar.

The business meeting also saw NFDC President Martin Wilson and Chief Executive Howard Button reveal the latest developments in training, industry guidance notes and the launch of a new NFDC supported National Demolition Training Group (NDTG) CCDO Smart Card Scheme – which it is hoped will also be extended to include demolition plant.


Marketing updates included an increased profile for the NFDC through magazine advertising and awards sponsorship in conjunction with Construction News, as well as the launch of a new corporate brochure which was also previewed at the business meeting.

Dates were confirmed for both Demolition Expo 2017, which will next year extend to be a three-day show held from 22-24 June and the 2017 annual convention which will be held 2-5 September in Malta – make sure you put the dates for both in your diaries!

With networking a key focus of the annual convention, the various drinks receptions, dinners (including the gala dinner) and simply chatting by the pool also proved popular with guests. The Gala dinner saw a staggering £20,000 raised by guests through the charity raffle and associated donations with all proceeds going to the Brighter Futures Radiotherapy Appeal.


The annual golf tournament meanwhile saw David Darsey, Managing Director of Erith Contractors’ Demolition Division, take the Claude Brown Trophy. Lawrence Kehoe, representing C&D Consultancy was the overall winner whilst the team prize went to Andrew Verity, director of Tyne Tees Crushing & Screening and Mike Allen representing Lawson Demolition.

President Martin Wilson said the annual Convention played a vital role in creating “a feeling of unity” for those in the industry as well as being an important source of feedback and discussion for members. He thanked all those involved, both those organising and attending, as well as Finning CAT as sponsors of the event and Rammer Hammer who, according to tradition sponsored the Gala Dinner wines this year.

Three safety experts attending the World Demolition Summit

The first World Demolition Summit to be held in America has announced that three safety experts will be in attendance, including Brian Hornyak (vice president, major projects, Sabre Demolition), Mike Casbon (technical director, ERM), and Mark Lies (partner, Seyfarth Shaw).

Brian Hornyak will look at behaviour based safety programs, Mike Casbon will focus on the need for attention to detail in demolition projects, and experienced labour attorney Mark Lies will report on the priorities for OSHA in 2017.
