EDA President William Sinclair shares his thoughts on NDA Las Vegas

This past January, the NDA Annual Convention was held in Las Vegas. European Demolition Association (EDA) president William Sinclair was in attendance, and he returned to Europe with some new ideas and thoughts.

He discusses this at length on the EDA website, and it's well worth your time to give it a read. Here's an excerpt:

"The area that I thought was incredibly interesting was how the demolition industry could assist with Emergency Response for Disasters.

When your view the tragic consequences of disasters on your television screens, it is striking how so many show images of rescue workers bravely carrying out their duty amidst partially collapsed and dangerous structures.

Obviously, each and every emergency will require a bespoke solution coordinated with the rescue workers and authorities, but I cannot help think how effective, and how much safer, the task could be if the rescue teams has the experts assistance and equipment from the demolition industry.

A review of the EDA 2016 Annual Convention

The European Demolition Association has produced an extremely detailed review of the recent EDA 2016 Annual Convention, which you can read on the EDA website. There's also the Best Moments video above which is well worth your time.

EDA Convention was a big success

If you attended the EDA Convention between June 9-11 in Glasgow, then you likely walked away as we did impressed by the high quality of content this year.

As well as a very friendly exhibitor's area, memorable gala dinner, and a leisure programme that allowed everyone to relax when they needed to, the speakers were all of a very high quality. They included Kenny Crookston of the Wheatley Group, Dave Rowe and Jim O’Sullivan from Keltbray, Carsten Tromp from Jansen Recycling, and Andreas Pocha from the German Demolition Association.

We'd like to thank them all, and can't wait for next year's convention, which takes place in June in Brussels, Belgium.

We're edging ever closer to an IDE demolition degree

Our very own John Woodward has announced during the recent European Demolition Association Convention in Glasgow that the IDE is very close to agreeing the format of the first degree-level qualification in demolition.

Speaking on behalf of IDE president Duncan Rudall, John said:

"We’re moving towards incorporation into the Engineering Council. The IDE can’t be incorporated but members can be. The institute can become similar to the Institute of Structural Engineers in that respect."

The options being considered are an MSc distance learning course for those already in the industry, as well as a BSc degree to support students who want a career in demolition. Whatever the options end up being, the degree(s) will be offered through Wolverhampton University initially.

EDA running 2nd edition Think tank on October 15th

The EDA's Think tank will be held fort he second time this year, on October 15th in Brussels, Belgium. Last year the topic focused on was recycling and end-of-life products, however, this year the topic is "Pre-demolition audit and waste flows from demolition sites."

According to the EDA:

"Demolition is about handling the space change, transforming waste (what used to be construction products) into new resources and creating at the same time room for future development.

Everyone involved on this process, from the general public, to construction product manufacturers, public administrations,… and the demolition industry itself, is very interested to work towards a circular economy (oriented to reuse and recycle as much as possible).

To generate this circular economy and to make sure the goals on recycling are achieved there are two key aspects to be prepared to detail: the pre-demolition audit (also known as waste management assessment) and the tracking of waste flows from demolition sites
"

The preliminary program for the day is as follows:

The think tank will be a morning meeting, with two sessions of debate.

There will be a panel of experts to introduce the topics and the key goal of the meeting is to engage the participation, through an open debate with related stakeholders and EU Officials..

08:30 – Accreditation of participants
09:00 – Welcome
09:15 – Session 1: Pre-demolition audit and waste management assessment/reporting
10:45 – Coffee break
11:15 – Session 2: Waste flows from demolition sites
13:00 – Closing remarks

A light lunch will be served after the Think tank to encourage networking and collective thinking.

If you would like to know more about this event, then please contact the EDA Secretariat directly.

Summary of the EDA Annual Convention

Between June 11-13 the European Demolition Association (EDA) held its Annual Convention in Helsinki Finland. For all those who could not attend, the EDA has put together a very thorough review of the event.

We think the presentation by John Woodrow sounds particularly interesting!

Full details of the Convention can be found on the EDA website. They also created a video, which is available to watch below, of the best moments:

Presentation at EDA Conference in Helsinki is well received

Last weekend saw John attend the EDA Conference in Helsinki where he delivered a very well received presentation on tower block demolition in Scotland showcasing how C&D are working in partnership with Safedem on over 20 multi-storey structures with all types of demolition techniques.

Safedem MD and former NFDC President William Sinclair attended in his capacity of EDA Vice President.

The event featured presentations from UK, France, Holland, Germany, Croatia and Spain and various topics were covered including "Waste - The Circular Economy" and "Demolition Trends"

Following the formal conference all delegates attended a black tie dinner on Friday night at the Helsinki Kasino, a former naval conference centre on the waterfront.

If John is speaking at the next EDA Conference in 2016 at least he will know how to get there as it will be held in Glasgow to welcome William Sinclair into the EDA Presidential chair.

World Demolition Summit 2013 is taking shape

The EDA has posted an update on this year's Demolition Summit, and how things are taking shape.

The Summit takes place on October 31st at the Krasnapolski Hotel in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. This year we will see a first: the Summit will include the presence of the first high reach training simulator in the exhibit area.

The emphasis this year is on the practical side of the demolition business, which means some very interesting presentations on difficult demolition projects. That includes one on the Boodarie Iron plant in the outback of Australia.

If you haven't signed up to come yet (and booked your hotel room), head on over to the Summit's official website where you can find out everything you need to know.

EDA Survey about Gypsum

The EDA are requesting participation in a survery regarding the use of gypsum products. We've reproduced the details and a link to the survey below:

The GTOG project aims to put in place an integrated approach to manage gypsum construction and demolition waste, starting from the dismantling of a building via the recycling of the gypsum waste and its re-incorporation in the manufacturing process.

Gypsum is indefinitely recyclable because the chemical composition of the raw material in plasterboards and blocks always remains the same.

At the end of the building life, gypsum products can be dismantled, recycled and reincorporated in the manufacturing process.

However, close loop recycling for gypsum products will only happen if:
  1. Selective demolition methods are applied systematically for all demolition and renovation projects;
  2. Sorting of waste is done at source – thereby avoiding mixed waste;
  3. Processing is carried out according to clear standards;
  4. Incorporation in the production process is carried out with innovative processes
EDA cooperates with the project as the final results will affect directly the industry and every demolition jobsite.

For this reason, we ask our members and the industry in general to participate on a global survey about the gypsum on the demolition industry.

To participate, just download the document (available in three languages) and share your experiences:

Survey about gypsum for demolition contractors (English)
Survey about gypsum for demolition contractors (French)
Survey about gypsum for demolition contractors (Spanish)
