EDA President William Sinclair shares his thoughts on NDA Las Vegas

This past January, the NDA Annual Convention was held in Las Vegas. European Demolition Association (EDA) president William Sinclair was in attendance, and he returned to Europe with some new ideas and thoughts.

He discusses this at length on the EDA website, and it's well worth your time to give it a read. Here's an excerpt:

"The area that I thought was incredibly interesting was how the demolition industry could assist with Emergency Response for Disasters.

When your view the tragic consequences of disasters on your television screens, it is striking how so many show images of rescue workers bravely carrying out their duty amidst partially collapsed and dangerous structures.

Obviously, each and every emergency will require a bespoke solution coordinated with the rescue workers and authorities, but I cannot help think how effective, and how much safer, the task could be if the rescue teams has the experts assistance and equipment from the demolition industry.

Presentation at EDA Conference in Helsinki is well received

Last weekend saw John attend the EDA Conference in Helsinki where he delivered a very well received presentation on tower block demolition in Scotland showcasing how C&D are working in partnership with Safedem on over 20 multi-storey structures with all types of demolition techniques.

Safedem MD and former NFDC President William Sinclair attended in his capacity of EDA Vice President.

The event featured presentations from UK, France, Holland, Germany, Croatia and Spain and various topics were covered including "Waste - The Circular Economy" and "Demolition Trends"

Following the formal conference all delegates attended a black tie dinner on Friday night at the Helsinki Kasino, a former naval conference centre on the waterfront.

If John is speaking at the next EDA Conference in 2016 at least he will know how to get there as it will be held in Glasgow to welcome William Sinclair into the EDA Presidential chair.

C&D customer Safedem is first UK demolition firm with Be Fair Accredition

We have to say congratulations to Safedem for managing to become the first demolition company in the UK to be awarded Be Fair Accredition. But what exactly does that mean?

The Be Fair Framework was created by the CITB, which is committed to promoting Equality and Diversity within the industry. The framework is an industry specific standard which provides a structure for employers to address fairness, inclusion and respect within their organisation. Benefits include:
  • Creating an environment where employees feel valued and supported
  • Creating an opportunity for an organisation to become a preferred employer and supplier of choice
  • Helping an organisation achieve corporate social responsibility gains and promoting the business within communities
  • Strengthening tender offers and helping win contractsIncreasing business benefits such as improving work-life balance for employees, reducing staff turnover, helping address skills shortages and attracting new recruits
  • Promoting public recognition as a quality organisation.
Commenting on achieving accredition, Safedem managing director William Sinclair said:

"Be Fair Accreditation demonstrates fairness, inclusion and respect to all – values that everyone at Safedem endorse and can take pride in "

Safedem blast for Sanctuary Housing stops the traffic

Yesterday in Glasgow saw another tower block demolished and we at C&D were watching from a distance rather than being involved.

Safedem carried out the controlled explosive demolition of a tower at Anderston for Sanctuary Housing, a project where C&D have no involvement, and it's proximity to the M8 motorway meant that traffic was halted with a police rolling roadblock to allow the demolition to take place.

Initial reports from William Sinclair at Safedem tell us that the prompt evacuation of the surrounding properties allowed the blast to go ahead at the earliest of the proposed times,11.30 am, and the job was without incident.

Congratulations go to Safedem on another job well done as can be seen from the included photograph and the video clip here. There's also a great set of photographs covering the build up to the blast available on Facebook.

C&D customer Safedem bring the house down at Dundee

Last Sunday saw C&D customer Safedem bring down two Dundee towerblocks in a controlled explosion that was doubly difficult in as much as, not only was there a church between the blocks that had to remain, but the blocks were constructed in a way not seen before by the Safedem blasting team of William & David Sinclair.

Media interest was great with the blast being shown live on Sky News and in reports on local tv and national BBC bulletins throughout the day.

Here at C&D we say a massive "Well Done" to all of the team involved on the day to complete a major, extremely difficult blowdown of unusually constructed blocks with no injuries to workforce or the general public. Yes there was minor cosmetic damage to the church, that will be repaired by the time you read this article, but that should not be seen as anything more than a minor incident in a superb job.

As well as the video footage above, we also have the post blast comment from William Sinclair as follows:-

There is a saying - save the best to last.

After almost 20 years of multi storey demolitions, Dundee City Council awarded their last two tower blocks to local company Safedem. Since 1995, Safedem have steadily changed the skyline of it's hometown demolishing over 40 tower blocks across the city in this period.

At 27 storeys the Derby Street blocks where built in an area surrounded by sandstone tenements with ornately carved date stones from the 1800's. However it was a relatively modern 1970's structure, St Martins church, that was located between the blocks that captured the medias attention.

Derby Street is located in the Hilltown area - aptly named as the sloping site saw the tower blocks built off a heavy duty podium structure that resembled the support legs from the nearby Tay bridge. The slope was such that at the east end of the structure the 850mm thick columns were 9metres tall - at the west end they were just 3 metres.

The internal floor plan of the structures was also highly unusual, with maisonette style homes spread over 3 floors, with the centre of the structure offset from the main living areas. The maisonettes , tall and narrow homes, where heavily reinforced concrete Walls divided the rooms every 2.75 metres. A total of 37 heavily reinforced cross Walls at any one level made this one of the most rigid tower blocks Safedem has ever encountered.

All these cross Walls needed drilled so each building had in excess of 5000 drill holes (a standard block is closer to 2500 holes), each drill hole housing an individual charge and delay detonator.

When assessing the structures and the nearby buildings to remain, it was obvious that each structure required it's own unique collapse mechanism. The north block needed to be initiated at the east end and directed to the east towards the nearby main road. The south block needed to come straight down and then rotate away from the church ensuring the debris came to rest away from St Martins towards a series of 4 storey buildings that form part of Safedems overall demolition project in the area.

Due to the proximity of the church a protective screen constructed of scaffold was erected at the gable of the church.

The evacuation of this heavily populated city centre location was carried out by Safedem s Community Liaison Team. Hundreds of residents were temporarily evacuated and catered for in the dedicated rest centre, ensuring the demolition could proceed within the target time window.

On initiation, and in front of thousands of onlookers, the two structures dropped as designed in a safe and controlled manner. On inspection of the church, part of the 14,000 tonnes of rubble from the north block had come to rest against the scaffold protection screen. The screen had ensured there was no structural damage to the church, although there was some minor damage to a fire escape area to the rear of the church building. The minor damage will be repaired in the next day or so.

Safedem Managing Director, William Sinclair commented,

" I was disappointed to see the minor damage at the church fire escape area because the standards we set ourselves are so high. However these were Dundees tallest structures and of a truly complex and rigid construction and I am delighted they are safely down having collapsed as designed.

This project required real team work from a number of agencies and real thanks must go to not just the hardworking Safedem team, but also to Dundee City Council and Police Scotland who worked with us every step of the way to deliver another safe and successful blowdown in Dundee."

Safedem's new Leibherr High Reach hard at work at Tayside House, Dundee

C&D customer Safedem are probably most well known for their superb explosive demolition projects such as Red Road, but they do carry out extensive demolition by machine throughout Scotland and into the UK, and this increase in machine demolition has seen William Sinclair invest a considerable amount of money in a new Leibherr High Reach machine.

The new machine has been put to work at Tayside House in Dundee to complete the demolition of the towerblock that was reduced to its current height by the use of traditional "Top Down" demolition over the last few months.

This footage shows the new machine working it's way down the block. Progress since this initial footage has been impressive and we expect that the next time we visit the site to carry out a scheduled site audit it will be well on the way to completion.

Changes at the top of the NFDC

Today, March 1st sees not only a new month but also a new President of the NFDC as William Sinclair takes over the chain of office from Gary Bishop.

William, MD of Safedem Limited, will take control of the NFDC at today’s AGM at the Dorchester and John & Jill will be there to see him do so.

Gary Bishop has been NFDC President for the last 2 years, coming into the chair in March 2011 just a few months after John became IDE President in November 2010, and the two have worked together at many events promoting the demolition industry and the need for competence and experience in that industry. Gary set out to do many things in his time as President and we are certain that when he hands over the heavy chain to William it will be done with a quiet satisfaction that he achieved what he set out to do in his two years and Gary can retire from the main job to enjoy quiet nights drinking a nice Rioja with Sarah and their girls Amy and Gemma, whilst still remaining involved as Immediate Past President of the organisation.

William, well known to readers of this website for his masterful demolition of tower blocks by explosives, most recently at Red Road, will bring his own views to the Presidency. From our dealings with William on many projects over the last few years, most notably Red Road and St. Nicholas House in Aberdeen, we will expect him to have many exciting ideas, to bring innovative thoughts to the table and to be a problem solver, all ideal attributes for the top job in what are still difficult times for this industry of ours.

We would like to congratulate Gary Bishop on a good two years, Martin Wilson on becoming NFDC Vice President, and finally our very good friend and colleague William Sinclair on taking the chains of office that may come with a heavy responsibility, but will be perfectly safe on the shoulders of a “Canny Scot” who will wear them with dignity and pride.

NFDC Extraordinary General Meeting today at JCB Headquarters at Rocester

Today sees NFDC CEO Howard Button, NFDC President Gary Bishop and most NFDC member company representatives attending the EGM at JCB World Headquarters in Rocester.

It is unusual for NFDC to hold an EGM but, bearing in mind that the business meeting at the Madeira convention was small, an EGM gives the opportunity to discuss relevant burning issues prior to the changeover in Presidency on March 1st 2013.

As associate members of NFDC we are not allowed to attend but we understand from various sources that the agenda includes a number of contentious items with regard to rearrangement of the regions, secretarial matters, the site audit scheme, and future conventions, all of which will require a vote from the members today.

We are certain that the debate will be long and hard and whichever way the votes go we hope that all matters are resolved by the time William Sinclair moves into the Presidency.

Mark Anthony, the NFDC Press Officer, will be attending the meeting and I am sure that his report wil be on the NFDC website and demolition news sometime tomorrow.

Red Road Flats feature on The One Show

We've covered the demolition of the Red Road flats in Glasgow a few times over the past year, and now the BBC's The One Show decided to pick up on the iconic flats.

Talking with Safedem's William Sinclair, he explains how complicated a job it actually is due to the steel structure of the building. We also learn how two types of explosives are used for such a structure.

The Red Roads flats coverage starts at the 20 minute mark with the video available to watch via the BBC iPlayer.

Safedem & Dick Green blowdown Dundee tower blocks

C&D Customer Safedem Limited, with our friend Dick Green as part of the team, succesfully demolished four tower blocks in Dundee by explosives on Sunday morning 31 July.

C&D were not involved in this project, but we send our congratulations to William Sinclair and his team on a job well done. The following links show the blowdown from different angles but it is easy to see that the towers dropped nicely into the intended exclusion zones.

Changes at the top of the NFDC

Today sees Jill and I catching an early train to London to attend the NFDC AGM at which I will deliver an address on behalf of the IDE and propose a toast to the NFDC at the luncheon that follows.

The AGM will see changes at the top of NFDC and here at C&D we would like to congratulate the following:-

Dave Darsey on two years as President where the NFDC has continued to grow and raise the profile of the demolition industry throughout the UK and into Europe. During his time as President Dave has stamped his personality on the role whilst keeping his hands firmly on the controls so that NFDC continued to grow and prosper under his Presidency and here at C&D we would like to congratulate Dave on a job very well done and we will remember the times we enjoyed together at NFDC Charity Balls, with his lovely wife Sarah, and on official business overseas at Demcon 2010 and the Demolition Awards 2010.

Well done Dave, now take the time to sit back and watch rather than being in the hot seat and take time with Sarah and the children to chill out and not worry about audit schemes, health surveillance, conventions etc etc.

Gary Bishop on becoming the President with strong views as to where he would like the NFDC to go during his presidency and the dedication to the role that will ensure that the NFDC is in safe hands. Also to Sarah who will be at his side throughout his term in office and be the steadying influence that he may need if times get rocky. We have enjoyed many hours in the company of both of them and I hope that we will continue to do so over the time of his presidency and continue with our personal training regime to become masters of Rioja!

William Sinclair on moving up to Vice President to assist Gary with the duties of the office of President and to stand in for Gary as required. William will bring his own skills to the role of Vice and will be excellent in that position. His wife Tracey will be there to help him if things get difficult and we hope that they will both be present at functions throughout the UK over the next few years so that we can continue to enjoy William's excellent company as we have done over the last few years, particularly when at the EDA in Istanbul.

Martin Wilson on taking up the position of 2nd Vice President that will see him take the first steps on the road to the NFDC Presidential office. Martin will bring dedication and confidence to the position of 2nd Vice and a willingness to work hard for the NFDC over the next 8 years.

Congratulations to all.
