Four multi-storey blocks to be demolished in south Glasgow

Tarfside Oval is being regenerated, and the Glasgow Housing Association has decided to demolish four mutli-storey tower blocks in the area as part of that plan.

The four blocks in question are 20, 40, 60, and 80 Tarfside Oval in Cardonald, south of Glasgow. The flats are already empty of residents, but still cost money to maintain up to a safe standard. Demolishing them will make way for new housing to be built on the land. In total some 60 houses are planned.

This is not a decision the GHA has taken alone. Local residents are apparently in favour of the demolition occurring. The flats are very umpopular and regenerating them would have been even more costly. So now demolition is on the cards, with the work taking place before the end of 2015 and meaning we could see new houses appearing there at some point in 2016.

Glasgow Housing Association starts demolishing Knightswood tower blocks

Back in July eight tower blocks were chosen for demolition around the Plean Street and Lincoln Avenue areas of Knightswood in Glasgow. Now the Glasgow Housing Association has begun demolition work on two of those blocks: 240 and 280 Lincoln Avenue.

Four blocks have already been refurbished on the estate and residents moved out of these two towers, the current work underway is the soft strip of both towers by Technical Demolition Services. After that a long reach machine will be used to bring the towers down.

Another major CDM-C order for C&D

We are pleased to announce that C&D have been awarded another major CDM-C order for works on the demolition of four tower blocks in Scotland.

This increases our workload in Scotland to 27 tower blocks currently on site or about to commence and certainly justifies the decision to open the Glasgow office.

Local students visit Lenton blocks in Nottingham

C&D customer Total Reclaims is knocking down five tower blocks in Park Street and Lombard Close in Nottingham. They are known as the Lenton tower blocks and are being cleared for 142 new homes to built over the next 4 years.

17 lucky students from the Edna G Olds Academy recently got to attend the demolition of the first 90 flats from the 12th floor of one of the blocks. This involved actually visiting the 12th floor and getting to ask lots of questions. As well as seeing Nottingham from a very high viewpoint, all the students were intrigued about the work, and hopefully some of them will choose to investigate further and maybe even enter the industry one day.

If you happen to be visiting the Lenton blocks before the towers have been fully removed, you should be able to see pictures the students created after their visit present on the security fencing surrounding the site.

How Safedem and Brandis A/S blasted two tower blocks

On the 13th May this year two tower blocks in Copenhagen were imploded through a collaboration between Brandis A/S and Safedem. The EFEE Newsletter has a detailed and fascinating article on the work involved, the blast design, and the risks involved in the job.

Here's an excerpt from the article:

The two concrete buildings, 15 and 13 stories, 14,100 t and 16,500 t, were constructed in 1954 - 1956. Because of outdated design and high cost of renovation, the owner, AAB cooperative housing society, decided in 2006 to demolish the buildings and hired NIRAS for planning and management of the demolition work. The options for demolition: Blasting, crane and ball, long range concrete breaker, deconstruction from the top lifting elements by crane, and demolition from to top using small machines were assessed with respect to safety, environment protection, cost and time. The result of the assessment showed that the blasting solution was the safest and most advantageous method.

After tendering procedure the Danish demolition contractor Brandis A/S together with the Scottish blasting company Safedem won the contract.

The demolition work contract started in October 2011 with stripping the buildings and preparation for blasting, scheduled in May 2012...

Safedem & Brandis A/S join forces to implode 2 tower blocks

Two tower blocks located in Copenhagen have been imploded successfully through a joint venture between Safedem and Brandis A/S. You can see the towers coming down in the videos above and below.



The collaboration was made possible through the European Demolition Association, who counts Safedem's William Sinclair and Bradis' Morten Brandis as board members.

The implosion went off without a hitch, with Safedem admitting the fact they were a Scottish company working in Denmark garnered just as much media attention as the implosion itself.

Coleman and Company continue their working relationship with C&D

We are really pleased to announce that Coleman & Company of Shady Lane, Great Barr, Birmingham have continued the working relationship with C&D by awarding us the contract for the CDM-C work on their contract for GHA to demolish 2 tower blocks in Pollockshaws, Glasgow.

The newly awarded contract will see Coleman & Company demolish the towers by use of high reach machines, which is a change in method from the previous phases of this contract which were carried out by explosive means.

Safedem & Dick Green blowdown Dundee tower blocks

C&D Customer Safedem Limited, with our friend Dick Green as part of the team, succesfully demolished four tower blocks in Dundee by explosives on Sunday morning 31 July.

C&D were not involved in this project, but we send our congratulations to William Sinclair and his team on a job well done. The following links show the blowdown from different angles but it is easy to see that the towers dropped nicely into the intended exclusion zones.
