John Woodward talks about demolition techniques

When The Chartered Institute of Building for the East Midlands needed a speaker to talk about demolition, they turned to IDE Council of Management member Mick Ulyatt to help find a solution. That solution turned out to be our very own John Woodward.

The speech that John gave along with Mick was very well received last year, and further events were requesting his presence at Rochester, Guildford and now Ringwood. The latest was at St Leonard’s Hotel on Tuesday, June 2nd. John spoke for 2 hours regarding current demolition techniques.

Institute of Quarrying follow the IDE lead by making CPD compulsory

The Institute of Quarrying follow the IDE lead by making CPD compulsory for all grades of member. It was called for by their members in a bid to raise standards even higher for those qualified to carry the letters FIQ, MIQ, and TMIQ.

The new CPD requirement for Technical Members (TMIQ), Members (MIQ) and Fellows (FIQ) will take effect 1 January 2015. It requires 35 hours minimum of Continuing Professional Development every single year, and annual audits will now call for a CPD record to be presented. Associate and Student grades are also being encouraged to partake in the CPD requirements, although it is not mandatory at those levels.

CIOB Kent CPD event is well received

As regular visitors to this site will know, John is always willing to talk all things demolition, be it to schools, clients, or other organisations and it is really nice when a talk generates a nice letter of thanks and some good feedback.

John's recent talk to CIOB Kent branch on the 28th April was well received as can be seen from the letter below. A subsequent talk at Wolverhampton College at their Wellington Road Campus as part of the "City of Wolverhampton Progression Week" also went down very well.

APS Midlands CPD Regional Event - 14 February

The next Midlands Regional CPD event is to be held in your on the Thursday 14 February 2013 at the Birmingham Medical Institute.

The event is titled “CDM-C Competence, Capability and Associated Complexity” and will consist of a presentation by John Banks, current Past President of the Association for Project Safety.

Institute of Construction Management Annual Meeting

Many members of the IDE are also members of The Institute of Construction Management as there is considerable overlap between the aims of the two institutes and their joint stance on CPD. So we are pleased to announce that the 37th National Rally of the ICM is being held on Saturday, June 30th at the Devere Village Hotel North Leeds.

The event commences at 7pm and will include a three-course dinner, cabaret, and dancing to live music. Tickets are £32 per person with accomodation available for £75 per double room.

C&D start 2012 with a large training order

The New Year is only a few hours old and C&D are pleased to announce a large training order.

The Association for Planning Safety have appointed John Woodward to tour the country presenting half day seminars on demolition from a CDM viewpoint. The seminars are designed to allow MaPS members to obtain knowledge about the demolition planning process, the need to appoint competent contractors and how to judge that competency, whilst accruing 4 hours CPD.

IDE President's blog discusses CPD and calls for contributors

Our very own John Woodward, who also holds the position of IDE President, has had his most recent Presidential Blog entry go live. The focus this time is on contributors to Demolition Engineer and some reminders about CPD.

Publication of Demolition Engineer relies on and benefits from contributions from the demolition community. It needs more such contributions which can take the form of articles, photographs, comments, or letters.

As for CPD, John hands out a few reminders about how to achieve the necessary CPD hours which are broken down into 5 key areas. For Non-IDE members there's another set of things you can do that are also detailed.

Continuous Personal Development (CPD) – Am I Bovvered?

Now that you have achieved membership of your desired institution you may feel that CPD is something that you are not bothered about. However I would say that, to be not bothered is a major mistake as more and more clients are now seeking proof of, not only membership of institutes such as The Institute of Demolition Engineers, but proof of CPD within the institute and in your working life.

As you will be asked for proof of CPD throughout 2010 and beyond why not decide now to make CPD one of your goals for this year. Attend as many seminars or training days that you can, record your attendance and use those records to prove your CPD.

The CPD record will allow you to demonstrate to potential clients that you take institute membership seriously, that your industry knowledge is up to date and that you are dedicated to your status as an institute member.

With two major seminars a year and numerous regional meetings the opportunity to obtain IDE CPD points has never been better so make a decision to attend as many as possible and keep recording those points as “Points make competence”.
